mommy notebook presents

Haleen, my grandmother, says that the best time in life is when your children are small. For this reason I treasure these family bed moments. On the other hand I sometimes wonder, is it all downhill from here?

I'll have you know that I require four, sometimes five pillows to sleep at night and not wake upfeeling bruised, as if I had slept under a pile of logs. I do sometimes wake up under a pile of children, however.

It has been very difficult for me to get into the habit of taking my prenatal vitamins this time. A big reason is that they are so freakin huge! I thought I would get into the spirit of things by getting some really good, natural ones. I found some that said "minicaps" on the label. I thought, These are for me! When I got home I found out how many you have to take per day...NINE!!!

Gone is the wedding ring that I adore. It was a safety measure I assure you, as I would like to survive this pregnancy with all of my digits intact. Now I'm wearing my old standby preggie ring that I always switch to when my fingers swell. Also, it's fun to have something pretty on my growing piggie.

Now that I'm walking for two, panting up and down the sloping streets in my neighborhood, I find myself hiring alot more cars than I usually do. Is it wrong to take a car to avoid the 15 minute uphill hike to the movies? Add to that the experience I had the other night, when I was in a car with a driver who hardly spoke english, didn't understand mine, and drove me in circles for half an hour looking for Brooklyn Heights. He had never heard of it. It is about two neighborhoods over from mine, and a very common destination. He would not use his radio to ask for directions. I guess I'm going to have to start carrying a map so I can direct the drivers. Very strange.

Lily thinks it's fun to ask:
"Mommy, how do you know that Violet is the last baby?"
"Because I know."
"But HOW do you know?"
"I just do."
"But how do you KNOW?"

Hmmm! How DO you know?!! LOL

Ah- the swelling thing!! Mine extended beyond rings. I got down to 1 pair of shoes that I could wear (& remain comfy), & I wore with most everything. I lost my ankles for the last 2 months of pregnancy with Reed. Wish I hadn't complained so much about my chicken legs!

I don't think parenthood goes downhill- just evolves. We inevitably miss our babies, altho' I understand that they always will be our babies- not just a cliche. But I think as kids grow & become more perceptive & funny, it's cool to realize what great friends they are & (hopefully) shall always be. But take & sketch tons of pictures while they're wee.

Thanks to you m'dear, I'm doing more character sketches of the kids of late. It's fun, & I'm tired of giving myself the excuse that I'm too tired to draw my clowns in the bathtub! You're an inspiration.

Love Ya!!

Aww, cute pics. Prenatal vitamins (or any daily tablet, for that matter) were always hard for me to remember to take. Girl, I don't know how you do the family bed with your kids and a belly. Leila was in our bed for a while, but she's only one year old and I can't handle her int ehre anymore so she is in the crib now. Then again, you probably have a much bigger bed than we do. We could only fit a full size comfortably in our room, lol.
And the ring, yeah I had to give mine up after a while. My replacement was one of those gumball machine rings, my niece gave it to me, LOL. hey, it has an open end so it grew with me!

i just know!!lol

o man my feet and ankles will be like baked potatoes before long!!

jodi email me some sketches! you always were so great at them!

michelle, we have a king size bed on the floor, and right now our 3 yr old is the only kid in bed with us.

the kids also have a queen size bed in their playroom which they share. honestly, they kind of sleep wherever they want to, all over the house. sometimes lily wants to sleep on the livingroom floor!

its really not hard to get them to sleep in their bed, usually, if one of them is in bed with me it's so i can go to bed early w/o having to do the whole bedtime routine. then i can just move them later. sometimes they come in our room in the wee hours of the morning, but it doesn't bother me.

of course when violet gets here we will have to be more careful, as it's not safe to let a baby and a toddler sleep together.

I can't identify w/ the swelling thing. My skinny ankles and fingers stayed exackatally (just saw Alice in wonderland...ha) the same throughout both. Which is why I probably looked so hilarious...like a walrus on pogo stick. Even my doctor told me I looked funny....sigh.

By the way Steph, your drawings are getting better and better. I'm becoming more and more involved in your world due to them.

thanks,i've been taking more time with them. when my drawings were just in a journal i always used pen, and any mistakes i made i just improvised.

i'm sketching in pencil first now, so its a better quality. i'll be adding some more full color pieces soon, done on computer, and i'm thinking about doing the grey-scale onesthat way too, for a cleaner image. such fun!

to jodi on missing babies. so true. i wish i could go spend an afternoon with them sometimes. mine are 8 & 9 now. i think we were designed to make them for a coupla decades at least. it's funny that now as i'm in my thirties, i am wanting to start having them all over again-swollen ankles and all- partly to see my big boys interacting and helping. i think that makes for very well-rounded men. i never, ever thought i would feel this way. ever!! mine were so close together that the baby years were a blur and very difficult. go figure!

what about wearing your ring(s) on a chain on your neck? I think i've seen others do this. Yesterday I had a hard time getting them off (I'm 6 months and it's hot in Chicago!), so I was going to go buy a chain today (it's my B-day, why the hell not!?). If I don't find a simple chain I'll buy myself a fun, bigger ring.
