Andy Liebner's "Wild Shot"

Former NMU student and skier, Andy Liebner, will be in town to sign copies of his new book, Wild Shot, on April 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Shiras room at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette, Michigan.
Liebner, whose grandmother hails from Trenary, was raised in Alaska and first moved to Marquette in 2002 after joining the U.S. Coast Guard. In 2005 he returned to Alaska to begin college and join the ski team. In 2010 Liebner won the U.S. Marathon series, and in 2011 he won the U.S. National College Cup and added two more All-American certificates to his resume while attending NMU for the 2010-11 season.
Wild Shot is outwardly about the external physical demands of the winter sports of cross-country skiing and biathlon, though on another level, it is a metaphor for a deeper quest of life. The book not only details some of Liebner’s own training and thrilling races but also delves into the mental and physical tips of other successful athletes he has worked with.

John Gubbins visiting writer at Northern Michigan University, Marquette Michigan

John Gubbins

On March 19, the Visiting Writers Series, hosted by the English Department at NMU, is featuring John Gubbins, author of the novel Profound River, which tells the “incredible true story of Dame Juliana—the nun who invented fly-fishing.”

Gubbins, who is from Ishpeming, has a law degree from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in history from NMU. His novel evolved from a research paper he turned in while enrolled at NMU.
Profound River, portrays one of medieval England’s greatest geniuses–Dame Juliana Berners, a fifteenth century nun, who was England’s first bestselling author. For two hundred years, her works remained atop England’s bestseller’s list. She wrote books on fishing, hunting and hawking, but her most memorable book is about fishing, The Treatise of Fishing with an Angle. This was not only the first book ever written about sport fishing, but also the first book ever written about fly-fishing. Dame Juliana was England’s first published woman author and entered legend as the nun who taught field sports to generations of English sportsmen.
The story reveals the mind of Dame Juliana as an older woman reflecting on the meaning of fishing and hunting and the lessons of her turbulent youth. Throughout Profound River, Dame Juliana finds resonances of a deep spirituality fostered through years of prayer in her experiences of nature. Finally, it deals with the challenges she faces as an aged woman grappling with the day to day economic and spiritual needs of her community of sisters.

Anatomy of “Anatomy”: The Making of a Movie

02/26/2012 by Victor

Last Tuesday a remastered version of the fifty-plus-year-old movie, ”Anatomy of a Murder” was released by Criterion. Along with the movie itself are some extras by people with knowledge of Preminger, the movie itself and other aspects.
spacer Also included are excerpts from a movie being made based on Joan G. Hansen’s book, Anatomy of “Anatomy”: The Making of a Movie. This movie will be released this year. I wrote and recorded the narration, and the excerpts are really quite nicely done. The remastered “Anatomy of a Murder” along with the extras is available in many of the
larger stores and also on the website mentioned above.

Manistique Arts & Crafts Fair

The Manistique Art Club has handed the reins of the annual Manistique Art and Craft Fair over to Lake Effect Community Arts organization. There are a few changes this year so be sure to read the Rules-Guidelines-Information in the flyer before applying. It will still be the usual fun busy day of arts and crafts in conjunction with the Manistique Independence Day celebration, on Saturday, July 7. There is

always a crowd for the Manistique Art and Craft Fair!

We expect there to be more applicants this year, and space is limited,so applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you want to exhibit at the Fair this year you’ll want to get your application in early. We will let you know if your application is accepted (or if it isn’t).

Attached is a flyer with the Rules-Guidelines-Information for this year’s Fair as well as the application form.
