Welcome to the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service

The Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service is the most comprehensive outreach and engagement program at the University of Kentucky.

Our mission, simply stated, is to make a difference in the lives of Kentucky citizens through research-based education. Jointly with our other land-grant partner, Kentucky State University, we take the University to the people in their local communities, addressing issues of importance of all Kentuckians.

$1 equipment lease benefits UK College of Agriculture and farmers

Extension and state police partner to make roads safer for all

The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and the Kentucky State Police are partnering to make Kentucky’s roads safer for farmers and others.

According to 2010 Kentucky Collisions Facts, farm machinery was involved in 193 collisions that year, 34 of which were injury collisions. The injury collisions resulted in 59 people injured and five deaths.

In 2011, the state police presented programs on farm machinery rules and regulations in each of the state’s 120 county extension offices. The programs were so successful that several extension agents have asked the state police to return this year.  [more]

UK College of Agriculture embraces social media

spacer Getting a message out to the masses has never been so convenient, and the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture is no stranger to engaging multi-generational, diverse audiences. It was a natural progression for the college to develop a strong social media presence.

“We have come to realize the need for a stronger presence in social media,” said Scott Smith, dean and director of the UK College of Agriculture. “Our mission has always included extending information resources and educational opportunities to everyone, not only those on the campus. Effective communication is the key to doing that well, and now communication formats are very rapidly changing. Social media extends our reach and touches many more Kentuckians.”  [more]

Extension helps Kentuckians learn how to save money

Specialists and agents with the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service are helping people across the state learn how they can save money through the Kentucky Saves program in partnership with the Kentucky Jump$tart Coalition.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis in the U.S. Department of Commerce, the personal savings rate for Americans in December 2011 was 4 percent. [more]

The University of Kentucky’s Integrated Pest Management School can help producers get a jumpstart on their 2012 management strategies.

The school is March 7 at the UK Research and Education Center in Princeton. [more]

Shades of Red sheds light on women's heart health

spacer As the health and wellness coordinator for the Henderson County Family YMCA, many people in Henderson see Annette Garrison as a really healthy, in-shape person and would not suspect that she has a reason to be concerned about heart disease.

“Because heart disease runs in my family, I have to make a conscious effort to exercise and watch what I eat,” she said. “I hope I can be a role model to others and show them that they too can prevent heart disease.” [more]

Kentucky Grazing Schools focus on improving pasture management
