UTRECHT SCHOOL OF ARTS

General

The Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU), located in the centre of the city of Utrecht, is at the heart of the cultural and student life of Utrecht. With around 3,500 students, the Utrecht School of the Arts is one of the largest art and culture-oriented universities of professional education in Europe. The Utrecht School of the Arts offers preparatory courses, Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes and research degrees in fine art, design, music, theatre, media, games and interaction and arts management.

The HKU facilitates and stimulates talented and passionate students to develop as visual artists, teachers, musicians, designers, technologists, arts managers, writers and actors. It offers students intensive coaching and supervision. The courses have a tutor system. A tutor has an intermediary function between the student and the teacher and supervises the study process. In nearly all practical subjects, the Utrecht School of the Arts has adopted the studio-based system, in which (teams of) students have their own workspace and where they meet their supervisors.

Project offices maintain contact with the business community, the government, the non-profit sector and the media and cultural sector. Another task of the project offices is to find commissions for students, giving them the opportunity to work in professional practice.
Students are given many opportunities to prove themselves in practice. They may use the school’s concert hall, theatre and gallery, professional studios and workplaces.
