(A) r4WB1t5 festival (CHI/2005.05.25/Mutiny)
This week a new art event hits Chicago. Unlike recent and massive art market
and festival adventures, (A) r4WB1t5 festival is a small, viral and infectious
form of festival full of raw bits of digital art and dirty new media.
r4WB1t5 (geek speak for "raw bits") is, according to organizer
jonCates, about developing "open and decentralized platforms"
to participate with and discuss new media art. Less purist than populist,
the first ever (A) r4WB1t5 festival happens on Wednesday May 25 at the
Mutiny, 2428 N Western Ave.
I Love Presets combine the sound of a semi-truck falling off the sunset,
a scratched up hip-hop album kissing an outlet and the sound of an angry
life guard at the boom-box swimming-pool. Audio and video collide head
on to open the timespace rift spewing forth sonic mirth and visual delight.
Where else have you seen a 16 color rainbow explode?
Get your workout on with Total Gym! A collaborative social network of
artists who play with and transform environments, Total Gym promises a
multi-tentacled gymboree for this r4WB1t5 festival.
The Faultless grabs pixels in heaps, pounds samples into new shapes and
punches out audio and video. Duck and cover, The Faultless is a one man
digital-punk system crash.
Presentations and videos by Mike Miles, Morgan Higby-Flowers, Joshua Conro
and r4WB1t5 festival organizers jon.satrom and jonCates open this night.
Organizers say that various new media art will also be freely available
at r4WB1t5 and online. If you can't get enough computer crashes, broken
beats, viruses and corrupted files then (A) r4WB1t5 festival is for you.
