What is FasTrak?

FasTrak is the electronic toll system accepted on a number of toll facilities in California, including the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as all seven Bay Area Bridges operated by Bay Area Toll Authority; it is also accepted on other toll roads in California. Please note, as part of the FasTrak system, the Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza is designed with electronic toll violation enforcement equipment.

  • Online: www.bayareafastrak.org
  • In Person: FasTrak Customer Service Center, 475 The Embarcadero (at Broadway), San Francisco; extended summer hours: 8:30am - 5:30, daily
  • In Person: Purchase a FasTrak tag at select Walgreens, Safeway, and Costco locations and register the tag onlie or over the phone using information above

When obtaining a tag from one of the vendors listed above, the tag may be used immediately; however, to add funds to the account, the FasTrak tag must be registered online at www.bayareafastrak.org/ or by calling the Customer Service Center at 1-877-229-8655.

 

Carpool/Motorcycle Toll Rate: $3

Effective Thursday, July 1, 2010, the Carpool Toll on the Golden Gate Bridge is $3. To receive the carpool toll rate of $3, carpools MUST do the following:

  • Have a FasTrak account in good standing and a valid FasTrak tag. The FasTrak tag must be mounted in the vehicle per instructions.
  • Stop at a staffed lane so that the toll collector may validate the vehicle as a carpool.
  • NOT use a FasTrak ONLY toll lane (you will be assessed the full $5 FasTrak toll if you use a FasTrak ONLY toll lane).

CASH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED as payment for the $3 carpool toll. Without a valid FasTrak account and tag, you are NOT eligible for the $3 carpool toll; and the full toll ($6 cash or $5 FasTrak) will be charged.

Carpool Eligible Vehicles & Carpool Hours

Eligible Carpool Vehicles

  1. Vehicles with three or more persons
  2. Motorcycles, as defined and designated by the California Dept. of Motor Vehicles, and includes three-wheeled motorcycles
  3. Buses
  4. Two-seat vehicles and vehicles with rear axle dual tires do not qualify as a carpool on the Golden Gate Bridge

Carpool Hours

5 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm, weekdays except seven observed holidays – New Year's Day, Presidents' Day (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

There are two colors of DMV issued Clean Air Vehicle decals - YELLOW and WHITE - that allow the vehicle to be operated by a single occupant in the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) or carpool lanes of California's freeways. If you acquired a hybrid vehicle with Clean Air Vehicle decal attached, and you are a resident of the Bay Area, you must open a FasTrak account in your name in order to drive solo in a HOV or carpool lane.

Vehicles bearing the WHITE decal crossing the Golden Gate Bridge QUALIFY FOR THE CARPOOL DISCOUNT  DURING CARPOOL HOURS of 5 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm on weekdays, excluding the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Washington’s Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

DMV issues WHITE CLEAN AIR VEHICLE decals only to vehicles that meet California's super ultra-low emission vehicle (SULEV) standard for exhaust emissions and the federal inherently low-emission vehicle (ILEV) evaporative emission standard.

Vehicles bearing the YELLOW decal do not pass toll free during carpool hours.

CA DMV Yellow Clean Air Vehicle Decal – The 85,000 YELLOW Clean Air Vehicle Stickers for hybrid vehicles have all been issued. They are no longer issued to hybrids.
