Operations support systems (OSS), the information technology infrastructure that gives carriers the ability to create, deploy, manage, and maintain network-based services, are being retooled to handle converged network operations. Carriers are buying solutions that will inter-work wireless, IP, and traditional PSTN elements within their enterprise, as well as extend a comparable level of management and control to dissimilar OSSes as part of their overall strategy. This industry analysis report examines recent marketplace drivers by focusing on billing, customer care, trouble/repair, planning and engineering, provisioning/inventory, network management, business management, and workforce management. Expenditures are segmented by OSS type and geographic region for both broadband and narrowband services.

    1.1            Operations Support Systems

The telecommunications industry is in a transition phase, as demand for wireless services continues to grow while legacy POTS services continue to decline. The net result is positive revenue growth, but a shift in winners and losers among the service providers. Operations Support Systems (OSS) spending follows telecom revenue, and will cause a similar shift among OSS vendors. Investment is needed for wireless systems as they increase their subscribers and offer new services, while cost control is a primary focus for legacy POTS networks. There is some hope for wireline providers in that broadband is expected to grow during the forecast period, but broadband wireless may ultimately win out for most applications. All of these changes require give and take in OSS spending, but will result in a net increase in the end. As such, INSIGHT projects that OSS revenue will increase from $50 billion in 2011 to $67 billion by 2016.

Today, OSS transformation is the new rallying cry. Service providers need to have OSS systems that integrate across the entire organization; systems that allow self-service for customers doing routine tasks, while also offering complete system access for customer service representatives trying to resolve issues in real time. These OSS systems need to be ......
