Bicycle Colorado thanks everyone who contacted Senators Bennet and Udall to encourage them to vote for the Cardin-Cochran amendment which puts dedicated funding for bicycling programs back into the federal transportation bill MAP-21. This amendment will ensure that local governments, school systems, and metropolitan planning organizations are able to access much-needed funds for making bicycling and walking safe and accessible.
Bicycle Colorado continues to monitor the federal transportation bill and will provide updates as the bill progresses.
Bicycle Colorado announces support for the "End the Hit and Run Loophole" Act (HB12-1084) introduced in the Colorado House by Representatives Kathleen Conti (R) and Rhonda Fields (D). The act will increase the penalty for a hit-and-run crash causing serious bodily injury from a Class 5 felony to a more serious Class 4, removing a dangerous loophole in Colorado law by giving a hit and run offense the same penalty as drunk driving.
Hit-and-run crashes disproportionately affect people who walk and ride bicycles. Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are four times more likely to be the result of a hit and run than other roadway crashes. The difference between life and death may be the immediate help that is offered at the time of the crash.
Feb. 16 - the House Judiciary Committee passed the bill unanimously, 11-0. The bill now moves to the House Appropriations Committee. For more information, visit our legislative page. Bicycle Colorado has launched Bike the Byways, a program that encourages tourism visits to all regions of our state, adding to the estimated one billion dollars in revenue that bicycling already brings to Colorado. This joint Bicycle Colorado and Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) initiative promotes bicycling along our twenty-five designated Scenic Byways routes. Cyclists are encouraged to register for free on the Bike the Byways website (www.BikeByways.org) and check off each completed byway and also provide tips and feedback about each of the routes.
