Nintendo Confirms Paid Download Content for Fire Emblem

Paid map and episode sets on the way for Fire Emblem Awakening.

Nintendo's first attempt at paid download content on 3DS was through frames and stickers for a print club app. Its next attempt will be for something a bit more gamer friendly.

Confirming reports that appeared in Nikkei over a month ago, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said during today's Nintendo Direct broadcast that Fire Emblem Awakening will get paid download content. The content will take the form of sets combining new episodes with new maps.

The first piece of paid DLC will be released on April 19 opposite the game. You won't have to actually pay for it, though. Nintendo will make the first DLC set available for free through May 31.

Iwata did not say how much the DLC will cost after that. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, our current sole example of a retail 3DS game with paid download content, offers music tracks at ¥150 a track (discounted through mid April to ¥100).

In addition to the download content details, the Nintendo Direct broadcast provided a glimpse at the game's cell shaded opening movie. These types of movies will be used at key points in the story.

Nintendo also showed a Fire Emblem Awakening prepaid card and revealed that the game's character designs are from Yusuke Kozaki.
