The Barents Region is extremely rich and has great economic potential, with vast natural resources and unique environmental values. Major investments are under way in new oil and gas fields in the Barents Sea.

spacer The earliest inhabitants were attracted by the availability of fish and game. Nowadays, oil and gas exploration, fisheries, forestry and tourism are attracting an influx of settlers to the region. For economic development in the Barents Region to be truly sustainable, due attention must be given to environment and to the interests of the indigenous peoples.

The industry structure of the Barents Region is dominated by medium-sized and very large industries within the steel, forest, paper, ore and mineral branches and within the fishing, gas and oil branches.
