Leagan Gaeilge

The Standing Stones are Michael Robinson and Vicki Parrish. We perform traditional music and song from Scotland and Ireland, and Canada and Australia where Scottish and Irish music took root during the Gaelic diaspora of the 19th century. We also do a certain amount of early music, and music from the other Celtic lands. Our instruments include wire-strung harp, nylon-strung harp, fiddle, flute, guitar, mandola, banjo and accordion. We are based in the San Francisco Bay area in California.

While others may try to take traditional music into the future, our goal is to take it into the past. We try to join our research on historical performance styles to the living tradition, so that our music can be both exciting and true to its roots. But the most important thing is to enjoy ourselves and to share this beautiful musical heritage with others.

Note to people who came to this site after reading my letter in Metro—none of my photos of San José are available here. I wasn't really prepared to arrange a public showing, especially since they waited a few months before publishing my letter. I guess I could put some of them up, but I don't have time right now. It would take me quite a while just to go through them and select the best. I have several hundred of them. Sometime in the future, perhaps.

Back in 2001-2002 we had some problems with our hosting company. We now have a new hosting company which we like. Unfortunately we lost access to the files our original site, so we could not simply transfer them. Instead the site had to be rebuilt from scratch and rechecked by hand. I am going to be rechecking every single page on this site, but this will take some time. I haven't had much time to update the site since this task was completed, as I also have plenty of other huge tasks going on. Meanwhile, please accept our apologies for missing pictures, bad links, etc. Notice that our extremely old URL www.sirius.com/~ststones is now permanently dead. Please use our domain name:

Encyclopedia of Traditional Celtic Music:

spacer Not quite an encyclopedia yet, perhaps, but this is the doorway to a large and ever-growing collection of interesting information having to do with traditional music, early music and related topics. A new topic that has been added looks at the use of the term "Celtic music" and whether or not something else might be better.
