Halloween, also known as All Hallows' Eve, is celebrated
around the world every year on the 31st of October. On this holiday,
children typically dress up in a costume (sometimes these are scary but other
times they are playful) and go trick-or-treating. As children go from
house to house, they ask for candy and other treats by asking the question,
"Trick or treat?". The "trick" part of the equation is mostly an idle
threat to play a prank on the homeowner if he or she decides to not give them a
"treat".
Other customs on this holiday include carving pumpkins
(to make jack o' lanterns), watching horror movies and going to haunted houses.
The night before Halloween (October 30) is often
referred to as "Devil's Night". In some urban areas, the rate of vandalism
and arson increases on this day. As a result, many communities band
together on the night before Halloween to form community watch groups in an
effort to deter such mischief.
