2011 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition Winners Announced

1st place: Kris Bowers (Los Angeles, CA)
2nd place: Joshua White (El Cajon, CA)
3rd place: Emmet Cohen (Miami, FL)
Aretha Franklin was honored with the Institute's Maria Fisher Founder's Award as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz celebrated its 25th anniversary with the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition and 25th Anniversary Gala Concert on September 12, 2011 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The event was sponsored by Cadillac and co-chaired by Madeleine Albright, Quincy Jones, Debra Lee and Colin Powell.
On September 13, the Institute presented an assembly program for hundreds of students at Washington, DC's Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano, Carl Allen, Kevin Eubanks, Ellington School graduate Ben Williams and others discussed the rich history of jazz and performed a special selection of music demonstrating the many styles of this American art form.
In September 2012, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance will open at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in Los Angeles. Six to eight talented young musicians from around the world will be selected to study and perform together in an ensemble during a two-year, graduate-level college program. Through this program, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music will offer its first graduate degrees in jazz. Applications are being accepted through December 1, 2011.
