  • spacer Enduradad I've missed the last 3 days with either a cold of allergies? Usually I don't usually get bothered with either while I train, but then again I've never trained at this level and had spring show up so early. It was 73 yesterday. 82 today. I have never biked outside in March!

  • spacer Enduradad Well it will be a whole week of trying to get my body use to the time change. I had a good weekend of training and I think I'll be ready for racing in April. My youngest boys are twins and I think they are going to do a youth Tri this May. That should be fun to have this be a family sport.

  • spacer spacer KAR The GFT Tribe E-Dad, Agree with the comment re:March. So far it has come in like a lion. VERY windy! Makes riding a real challenge, but you gotta get out there..You and I are about the same age. It's still early enough to be searching for that perfect IM training plan.Combine that with the perfect nutrtion plan, show at the GFT at the perfect racing weight, with the perfect game plan, and execeute it flawlessly.Sigh, it's fun to dream isn't it.?..Maybe I need to stop thinking about being the fat, dumb, and happy participant, and think about being the lean, mean, and hungry competitor...Dropping the first 10 lbs. was easy, but since then, it aint easy. Stay the course.... Train Safe, everyone

  • spacer spacer KAR The GFT Tribe Anyone else having trouble with this forum, or is it me? Seems like most of the time, it's not working. E-Dad, if we keep posting in the Tribe section, we'll to tell everyone what it's all about. I guess the motto "More Stones" will be need to be explained soon. Good training weekend. It's beeen a real mild winter, so getting outside has not been a problem. Saturday was a 27 mile ride, followed by a two mile run. Today, Sunday, was a 10 mile run, and a 30 minute swim at 4pm. Xtri.com has a good article extolling the virtues of the brick workout, versus recent claims that brciks were not necessary. Check it out... Looking at my race pictures, I could stand to lose about 25 lbs. I've taken off 10 lbs so far, so 15 more to go. Happy training everybody. The countdown clock is ticking...

EnduradadThis weekend I had one of thoses spells that I just didn't have the energy or the MO to get moving. I did get all the family stuff done, just not play time.
Still with the mild winter, I think I'm ahead in my training.
After the last 12 years I'd say that IM is the best ballanced sport to keep your body whole! It sure feels good to be mid 50's and still be able to play ALL day!

KARAgree with the comment that IM training keeps us whole. For the long haul. I thought about cross fit, but I don't know what I'd be training for. I'm too old for it anyway(wink!) Good read about it on EverymanTri. It just looks like a high chance for injury...I saw a race ad for a half marathon at the end of April in Key Biscayne. I know it's going to be a hot one, and I wondered who would try such a thing? It's sure to be hot and humid, even at 6:30am. So I signed up... Todays high was 84 degrees, tomorrow same thing. Beats shoveling snow!... Train safe, everyone.

  • spacer KAR Take away my mancard for listening to Barry Manilow? When I'm changing channels on the radio, I'll stop at whatever sounds good, depending on mood. Whether it's Barry Manilow, or Aerosmith, etc. Pre-race I'll listen to Diana Krall-smooth Jazz-to relax the mind. Once out of the truck, the postive self talk and race visualization starts. Now if I we're listening to Menudo or New Kids, you can have my mancard! Run329, thanks for your response. The headphones are just a matter of choice, to each his own. I've been running for nearly 36 years and have never been tempted. I've never been on a treadmill either. Along with the bike trainer, I'd probably go insane, all the pedaling and running and not going anywhere. I read Runners World on twitter, posted last week: good articles on how running does NOT ruin your knees.

KARI guess I'll give up on the headphone thing, I guess it's just not for me. I'll just think Pink Floyd and "Run Like Hell"... George Sheehan said that running will eventally make a philosopher out of you. Don't know aout that for me, but running is a good way to clear the head, solve problems and come up with ideas... Running season is over for me, three halfs and a 10k, that's enough. Looking forward to the tri season... I'll give myself a slow start for the first couple of races, then go from there. I bought a full IM training plan about five or six years ago. It puts the long runs on Thursday instead of Sunday. Maybe I'll give that one a go this year. ..What say ya'll?

  • spacer spacer KAR The GFT Tribe Headphones, or I-pods, or walkman, or whatever they're called. Can anyone tell how they may affect performance, negatively or positively? Seems like almost everyone runs with them. If I'm coming up from behind someone, I always give a shout out to avoid startling them. But if they're wearing the stuff, I save my breath, they're not going to hear me anyway. Do you wear them to pass the time? Can they help you to get faster? And what if you didn't wear them, would you run slower? What do you listen to? I don't know what I'd listen to. Led Zeppelin? Jimi Hendrix? Black Oak Arkansas? Barry Manilow? "Sweet Melissa, angel of my lifetime.." Diana Krall? "Love letters straight from your heart..." Or maybe Waylon Jennings? "She's a good heated woman... " Head East? Ok I know, do a search and find something to match the cadence you want to run. I'd just like to know how it may affect performance. I'm finally giving it some serious thought. (Sigh), Or maybe I'll just stay "old school", and pay attention to what's going on around me.

Run329It drives me nuts having to adjust the ear phones our ear buds over and over for 26 miles. Love the music, it does take your mind off things but I begin to go nuts trying to keep them in place and I've tried several kinds. Never have raced with them in! And don't care to my mind should be on the race.

EnduradadI don't know how you've trained all these years without some tunes to break the bordom? You really need to train one day and turn on "Free Bird" When I'm on the treadmill I bump up the speed to match the tempo. By the end of that song I'm almost dead. And niothing gets you going at 4am like "Start me up" and a little "Low Rider" !

I do want to say, if I catch you playing Barry Mailow I'm taking away your man card!

Run329Well I do run with tunes every now and then, just can't find good ear phones. Little Jimmy Buffett, UB40, Bob Marley, Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, and any 80's music. Another thing I've never ran on tread mill, that blows some peoples mind. I love nature

  • spacer Enduradad KAR, the doc put everyting back where it should be and things seem ok. I'll probably break something else this weekend. The time to race clock seems to be moving pretty fast already. I guess I need to get out of the winter mode and work on base training. Good luck with the 1/2M.
