RHINELANDER - The threat of wildfires is upon us early in the Northwoods this year. Last year at this time there was still a foot of snow on the ground. This year, it's warm and windy, and the DNR says there have already been 130 wildfires throughout the state.
"Last time I remember a fire season starting so early it was in 1988," says Andrew Shaney a Forest Ranger with the DNR.
The receding snow might be a welcome sight for warm weather lovers, but it also means switching on that fire safety mindset almost a month early.
