So What is Horror punk by definition? Horror punk (also known as Horror rock) is a music genre that we beleive was defined by bands like The Misfits, Alice Cooper, The Damned and The Cramps blending horror movie lyrical themes and imagery with musical influences from early punk rock, post-punk, doo-wop, psychobilly and, to a lesser degree, rockabilly. Horror punk bands usually tell tales through their lyrics, which are often related to horror films, black humor, and horror stories or novels. The horror punk genre has a thriving underground following, The fan base has been tied to the resurgence of the closely-related genres, psychobilly and deathrock.

Below are specific definitions about what type of music you will find here, and what exactly makes us tick! we do this because we welcome all newcomers to the genre, and want to expose you to great music!

Horror Punk/Horror Rock

HORROR PUNK/ ROCK:Horror punk is a music genre that has origins in the early works of the band The Misfits, blending horror movie themes with early punk rock and varying amounts of doo-wop. Bands tell tales through their lyrics, which are often influenced by horror movies, particularly those with werewolves, vampires and zombies. Some bands incorporate influences from heavy metal and gothic rock, and prefer the label horror rock. Other bands show heavy influences from Hardcore punk, and are often described as horror hardcore. Notable horror punk bands include the Misfits, Samhain, The Undead and Mourning Noise. The genre has a thriving underground following, with websites and festivals. This has been coupled with the resurgence of other closely related forms of music psychobilly and deathrock. In the 2000s, the genre has seen some mainstream success, with the bands Murderdolls, DIEMONSTERDIE, and Wednesday 13.

Halloween

Halloween, Oct. 31, the eve of All Saints' Day, observed with traditional games and customs. The word comes from medieval England's All Hallows' eve (Old Eng. hallow="saint"). However, many of these customs predate Christianity, going back to Celtic practices associated with Nov. 1, which was Samhain, the beginning of winter and the Celtic new year. Witches and other evil spirits were believed to roam the earth on this evening, playing tricks on human beings to mark the season of diminishing sunlight. Bonfires were lit, offerings were made of dainty foods and sweets, and people would disguise themselves as one of the roaming spirits, to avoid demonic persecution. Survivals of these early practices can be found in countries of Celtic influence today, such as the United States where children go from door to door in costumes demanding "trick or treat."

Horror Films

Films from the horror genre are designed to elicit fright, fear, terror, disgust or horror from viewers. In horror film plots, evil forces, events, or characters, sometimes of supernatural origin, intrude into the everyday world. Horror film characters include vampires, zombies, monsters, serial killers, and a range of other fear-inspiring characters. Early horror films often drew inspiration from characters and stories from classic literature, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Later horror films, in contrast, often drew inspiration from the insecurities of life since World War Two, giving rise to the three distinct, but related, subgenres of the horror-of-personality film, the horror-of-Armageddon film, and the horror-of-the-demonic film. The last subgenre may be seen as a modernized transition from the earlier horror films, expanding on the earlier emphasis on supernatural agents that bring horror to the world. Horror films have been criticized for their graphic violence and dismissed as low budget B-movies and exploitation films. Nonetheless, some major studios and respected directors have made forays into the genre, and more serious critics have analyzed horror films through the prisms of genre theory and the auteur theory. Some horror films incorporate elements of other genres such as science fiction, fantasy, black comedy, and thrillers.
