I've never met a Jane Eyre movie I liked, so what made me think I'd enjoy a book modernization? In the original novel Jane's a strong character, but this Jane is a wilting flower. And though the author has given her a terrible past, it hasn't made me sympathize with her.
Also, Mr Rochester is a rock star, and I can't stop picturing him as Rick Springfield in Hard to Hold.
Well I only paid 50 cents for it. Time to read the end and move on to the PD James I started.
In other more important news, how come no one told me they did a Prince medley on The Voice? Both my mother and father watch this show, yet neither informed me. ?! Not sure how I feel about "Kiss" as honkeytonk though.
So here's the Big Question: Do you finish a book even if you don't like it? I stopped doing that at least 5 years ago. Once your To Be Read pile gets into the 100s, you just can't waste time on meh.
PS - I see from her acknowledgements that Rochester is probably supposed to be sort of Springsteen. I tried to picture him too, but always came back to Rick.
PSS - There are many 4 star reviews of this book on Goodreads, it's by no means A Bad Book. Just not for moi.

Yes I finish books I don't like because I pay for them and dont wan to waste my aubible credits!!!
perfect example: SULA. HATED HATED HATED it but listened in fast forward to get to the end.
Please excuse my Prince ineptitudiness ... did not realize these were Prince songs ...
As for books (and movies) - if I'm already 1/4 through it and the characters don't meet the London Mabel Fifty-Megaton Bomb* test, I ditch it and move on.
* London Mabel Fifty-Megaton Bomb test: If a fifty-megaton bomb went off and killed these characters right now, would I care?
If I've given a book a decent chance, say 1/3, and I'm not engaged, I stop reading. The only exceptions are books sent to me for judging in a contest. Those I must finish.
This doesn't seem like a book I'd enjoy.
Whether or not I finish depends:
-am I invested in the characters - if so I'll skim through to find out what happens to them - witness the Outlander series which infuriates me but I love the characters
-if I haven't gotten invested in anything - no - I won't read it - there are too many books I want to read
-is it part of a series and I'm enjoying the other books in the series - again - skimming
@ Simone - I'm less pissed off if I bought a physical book, cause I can pass it on to someone who might like it. Bad when it's an ebook and I can't!
@ladada - Sadly... Jane did not live through the bombing.
@Mary Stella - It takes about 1/3 of a book before it becomes unputdownable for me. But I think my fugetaboutit limit is at the 1/4 point.
@JJJ - The characters are the It Factor for me too.
I used to always finish a book just on principle - or something. I guess the optimist in me thought it must get better so I became a great skimmer. I gave that whole thing up about 10 yrs ago and decided life was too short. It's the same with library books that I thought I'd like but the blurb on the inside cover no longer appeals when I go to actually read it. I figure I can always take it out again if the whim hits.
Sorry about the Prince songs but I haven't actually watched the Voice yet. I was saving them for when we got together. :)
