Habitat
The Sustainable Trails Initiative calls for the reclamation of 28 acres of habitat through trail closers and rebuilds. FOW could not do this important work without our hardworking volunteers.
Because of the ongoing problems associated with invasive plant species taking over many areas of our natural woodland, FOW and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation are always looking for new, successful ways of controlling these weeds. This past summer, FOW tried a pilot program that used goats as a method of removing invasive plants.

Water
A lively discussion followed Dr. Paul Kingโ€™s lecture on the Marcellus Shale at Valley Green Inn on November 9, 2011. The lecture was part of the Friends of the Wissahickon lecture series, Valley Talks, sponsored by Valley Green Bank. FOW hosts lectures each year on such varied topics as the plants, wildlife, and water quality of the Wissahickon.
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and FOW developed the Wissahickon Stormwater Mitigation and Sediment reduction Project to improve the water quality of the Wissahickon Creek and restore the integrity of the wildlife habitat.

Trails
In addition to patrolling Wissahickon Valley Park and other duties in service to park users, FOW's Trail Ambassadors lead free hikes in the Wissahickon throughout the year. Trail Ambassadors are park docents who aid and educate park visitors with anything from directions to safety needs to park history, flora, fauna and geology.
Soon after Hurricane Irene in August of this year, FOW volunteers were inspiring in their dedication and enthusiasm as they worked to repair the trails in the Wissahickon.

People
At last year's Whispers Along the Wissahickon, FOW invited everyone to join them celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Wissahickon Environmental Center. The Friends also introduced the new Passport to the Wissahickon, a free informative brochure for FOW members and anyone who purchases a Map of the Wissahickon Valley.
Everyone attending Winter in the Wissahickon enjoyed chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack-Frost nipping at your nose, and creating their own holiday wreath.
