Team Buxton

Dr. John Pates is a HPC and BPS chartered Sports psychologist. He is also the manager of the sports degree programmes at the university of derby Buxton. He has considerable experience in the area of Sports Psychology and Coaching. He has a large portfolio of Sports Psychology consultation work with professional golfers. More specifically, John has worked with over 8 Ryder cup players, the current USA Open Champion, 17 European tour winners, 2 World cup Winners and over 50 professional golfers. Taken together he has been the mental trainer to European Tour, Ryder Cup, World Cup and Major Tour Winners. His research interests are in peak performance states and psychological interventions that initiate flow

Mark Cheetham. Is a sports physiotherapist who is a specialist in strength and conditioning and posture ergonomics. He is a qualified physiotherapist who has worked with the MOD and is currently working with elite golfers, the English golf union, professional footballers and 10 Olympic athletes. In addition to supervising dissertation students and being second supervisor to a strength and conditioning PhD student teaches Anatomy and Physiology to level 4 Joint Honours and foundation coaching students; Level 5 students: Sports Nutrition and Health and Activity in special populations; Level 6 students: Physiological testing and measurement to final year students. Research currently involved in is investigating the effects of novel training methods upon self-selected exercise intensity within Special Olympic populations. The other research is education based, observing the impact of class-based literature review sessions upon students ability to critique literature and their writing style. Mark is also an advisor for the EGU.

 

Adam Baker.  Is a sports physiotherapist who has worked with a variety of professional sports teams. For example, Barnsley football club, Chesterfield Football club, Sheffield special Olympics, British orienteering and TASS. Adam Currently works with 10 Olympic Athletes. Adam Graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a first class degree in Physiotherapy and he worked in a number of NHS hospitals for several years. Adam also worked at Sheffield Hallam University and has just completed his Masters in sports injury management and therapy.

 

Lee Rylands. Is a sports coach specialist. Graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2000 and worked for 4 years in leisure and sports management. In 2004 took a position within the Coaching and Education department of British Cycling. This role includes the development of coaching qualifications and resources for cycle coaches. During the development of these resources he worked with the British Cycling team, riders their support staff, and other key bodies. These include national coaches, team Psychologist, Beijing and Athens Olympic medallists, English Institute of Sport, UK sport, Sport Coach UK and Sport England. The knowledge and experience gained whilstworking with such a high profile team and support staff is utilised within the delivery of lectures and seminars at the University of Derby. Furthermore, working relationships have been established with British Cycling and key bodies to enhance the learning and knowledge of students.
Minas Mina. Nutritionist. Is the former 2007 British Body Building Champion. Currently undertaking MPhil/Phd at the University of Derby (in Buxton). (Research in strength performance and training using EMG “electromyography”) Master in Research (MRes) Sport Science at ottingham Trent University and Sport Studies B.A (Hons) finalist, with a professional qualification in nutrition, and strength and conditioning coaching skills.
Andrew Cowen is a Sports Psychologist who has a special interest in existentialist psychology. He is currently studying for a PhD. He is currently researching and developing a theoretical framework for applied sport psychologists called ‘Balance Theory’.

Charles Spring. Assistant Subject Manager for the sports provision at UDB. Has experience in coaching to elite level in Martial Arts and delivers sociological based modules within the sports programme area. He is currently developing the worlds first Single Honours Degree in Martial Arts. This degree is supported and endorsed by a number of National and International Governing Bodies. These include The World Martial Arts Council and the European WingTsun Organisation (EWTO). Their support is based on their need to provide their members with a degree level qualification in martial arts.
