Deep Listening Intensive at Ratna Ling
August 13-17, 2012

REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

Dr. Pauline Oliveros, one of the foremost composers of our time, will offer intensive teachings in her practice  of Deep Listening®, August 13-17, 2012. Sponsored by the Center for Creative Inquiry, the program will be held at Ratna Ling Retreat Center, a beautiful and welcoming retreat setting  in the hills of Sonoma County, California. The Center for Creative Inquiry was founded in 2000 to explore alternate forms of knowledge and inquiry and their potential to bring about fundamental change at the individual, cultural and social level.

Oliveros, founder of the Deep Listening Institute of Kingston, NY, describes Deep Listening as the experience of heightened awareness of sound, silence and sounding.  Benefits from the Deep Listening practice include expanded awareness of time and space, relaxation that supports musical activity, an expanding sense of humor, dissolution of old limits and opening to new patterns.

In the meditative atmosphere of Ratna Ling we will explore core concepts of improvisation.   Musicians of all abilities as well as non-musicians may participate in the Deep Listening exercises during the intensive.  All styles and abilities will be welcomed in an open exploratory circle. There will be improvisations with and without instruments.

Some of the benefits of Deep Listening practice include expanded awareness of time and space, relaxation that supports musical activity, an expanding sense of humor, dissolution of old limits and opening to new patterns.  There will be opportunities to work alone, in pairs, trios and in larger groups, drawing on Deep Listening practices explored in the open circle exercises.

Our work will also be supported by the practice of Kum Nye - a Tibetan yoga that relaxes body and mind and opens up the senses -- and sessions working with the Time, Space and Knowledge vision (TSK) of Tarthang Tulku, founder of the Center for Creative Inquiry.

The Deep Listening Intensive is sponsored by the Center for Creative Inquiry, founded by Tarthang Tulku to foster exploration of alternate forms of knowledge and inquiry and promote the potential of creative inquiry to bring about fundamental change at the individual, cultural, and social level. Oliveros offers a pioneering way to engage sound that is resonant with Creative Inquiry methods and the Intensive will integrate methods from both approaches.

"In between the 'no more' and the 'not yet', we may say, lies the eternally present and the equally eternally absent 'time zone' called 'now' ".  -Tarthang Tulku, Time, Space and Knowledge: A New Vision of Realty, 1977, Dharma Publishing

"The concepts found in these teachings will guide some of our improvisations.  I look forward to our time together at Ratna Ling."
-Pauline Oliveros, DM
