Part time Colorado resident Tim O’Donnell defended his 2011 victory at the San Juan 70.3 on Sunday in Puerto Rico.

O’Donnell recorded the fastest swim (23:42) and run (1:17:17) splits of the day to take the overall win by 1:36 with a total time of 3 hours 51 minutes. Boulder’s Michael Lavato posted a 3:57:54 and a solid 4th place in this early season race.

Boulder women also faired well with Amanda Lavato (yes, there is a relation) placing 8th overall with a 4:41:34 while Mandy McLane rounded out the top 10 overall with a 4:44.

Ten age group athletes from Colorado competed in San Juan, the fastest of which was Shane Niemeyer who placed 30th overall with a 4:27. Shane is an elite age grouper and was featured in the NBC airing of Ironman World Championships 2010 for his compelling life-story.

Long time Boulder event coordinators Barry and Jodee Siff have returned to race direction with the Boulder Downtown Running Series after selling their previous race series to Ironman. The Boulder Downtown Running Series will remain mostly intact with a few small changes.

From 5430 Sports

BOULDER, CO (March 15, 2012) – 5430 Sports, the Boulder-based sports event management company founded in 2004 by Barry and Jodee Siff, will once again direct the very popular Boulder Downtown Running Series. The Boulder Triathlon Series, which was once a part of 5430 Sports, will remain under the direction and ownership of Ironman®.

“We originally took over the Boulder Downtown Running Series out of our love for the events,” said Barry Siff. “Ironman has done a solid job of operating the races for the past two years and we very much look forward to being involved again while continuing to grow this series. We’re excited about the opportunity for 5430 Sports to reestablish itself as a leading sports event management company, focused on high quality athlete experiences.”

One change to the Boulder Downtown Running Series is the cancellation of the Uni-Hill 2K. 5430 Sports plans to add a third replacement race to the series, which will most likely take place in September. The dates for the other Boulder Downtown Running Series events are: West End 3K – July 19, and Pearl St. Mile – August 9.

Prize money will continue to be offered at each event, as well as for the series, to the top male and female competitors and top masters’ finishers. In addition, 5430 Sports will continue its emphasis on youth participation, offering children’s races at each event equal to one-half the distance of the adult race. These are for open to kids 11 years old and under.
