Lighting control is an essential part of every lighting system. A good control system satisfies the design intent and owner’s needs by providing the desired level of flexibility and energy efficiency—typically involving providing the right amount of light where and when it is needed. While flexibility is enhanced by giving users greater control over their lighting, energy efficiency is enhanced by automating control system functionality to save energy in response to inputs such as occupancy, a schedule, available daylight, a utility request and so on. Because of the strong potential for user satisfaction and energy savings, how lighting is controlled is increasingly becoming a significant part of overall lighting system design, with numerous strategies and equipment choices available to the designer. This chapter identifies the basics of controls, what strategies are ready to be implemented by a good control system, and the equipment and systems used to enact these strategies—including how to integrate and commission this systems and advanced options such as wireless and digital. |
