Hawaii Hotels: Kona Village Resort -- Family Heaven

For the most part, Hawaii hotels are booked up for the holidays. Yes, its kinda crazy out there. But should you get the urge for a post Xmas vacation with the little ones, the Kona Village Resort might be one of your best choices. It's an old resort but timeless rather than ugly: guests stay in thatched-roof hales that are truly Polynesian in style. The resort is secluded and peaceful. The rooms do not have televisions, a blissful respite from information overload. The staff is generally quite chilled out and friendly. The children's programs, like classes teaching hula and Hawaiian fishing net throwing, don't cost a dime (many resorts view them as a profit center) and you don't have to sign the kids up in advance to get into a class). The small number of guests make the place feel quite intimate. The beach is not the best but the overall setting, on a palm-lined cove, is hard to top. The resort is planning a major renovation in a year, so it is starting to feel a bit dated. But dated in a classy way, as opposed to a sad and tired way. Which explains, in part, why the room prices remains fairly steep. The Kona Village is precisely the place Gilligan would have washed up on had he been stranded in Hawaii rather than on some other mysterious island. And Gilligan would never have wanted to leave.
