In His Shoes Martin Luther King Retreat honors focuses on "Service"

The 6th Annual In His Shoes Martin Luther King Weekend took place on the eve of the Obama Inauguration. Under the direction of Fr. Vazken Movsesian, participants explored different dimensions of "Service" - the theme of this year's retreat.

Saturday night, the Retreat began with the showing of "Darfur Now" the acclaimed documentary about six different means to action in Darfur. Sunday, a guest from Armenia, Hasmik Babayan, who is studying in Nairobi, gave a talk to the group, followed by a Requiem Mass for the slain Civil Rights leader.

A soul-food brunch followed the morning activities at the studios of Vasken Brudian in Atwater Village. Gor Mkhitarian lead the group in community singing of his new CD, "Spirit." Fr. Vazken was pleased to welcome human rights advocate and defense attorney Christopher Armen to the event. During the last days of the election last November, Attorney Armen, Fr. Vazken and Varoujan Movsesian were out in Nevada in a get-out-to-vote campaign with the Obama people.

Monday evening, the In His Shoes monthly feed to Los Angeles' Skid Row brought food and clothing to the city's indigent population.

The Week came to an end with a special podcast dedicated to "Hope" - the Dream of Dr. King, finding fulfillment in the new dawn and new day. (Hear at www.epostle.net)

Watch here for blogs and pictures coming in the next few days.

Open Letter from Fr. Vazken - This Day in History... (Dec. 18, 2008)

Tonight the Christmas Spirit will come to LA as Gor Mkhitarian releases his 7th CD, Spirit with a concert in Los Angeles.

Im writing to share my enthusiasm about this CD with you. The Spirit CD represents much more than the release of some new music. It reflects the feelings and expressions of a new generation in a true spirit of respect for the past, love for life to today and hope for tomorrow. The songs harmoniously weave ancient church music with the pop sound that is so uniquely Gor Mkhitarian.

Im proud to have been part of this project from the beginning and ask that you join us for the CD-Release concert, tomorrow, December 18, at Zipper Hall (across from the Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA).

The concert is presented by the In His Shoes Mission, and proceeds benefit its many projects that bring relief to the suffering people in the world. In particular, In His Shoes provides humanitarian aid and assistance to people that have experienced by Genocide, such as in Darfur.  In His Shoes seeks to answer even the most despicable acts of hatred with the Love taught by Jesus Christ.

At this Christmas season, I ask that you join us in celebrating the Birth of Love, by being a part of history. The last time the Armenian spirit was rocked like this was in the Middle Ages. Dont wait for another 700 years to pass to get another chance! Come and experience the Spirit with us tomorrow evening at Zipper Hall. Were also pleased to feature the music of Mariam Matossian, in her First West Coast performance.

spacer Stand UP and be counted

Reaching out to the youth with the Love of Christ is our calling. We need your prayers on a daily basis! Please remember our youth, all youth as your youth. Our priest, staff and workers are in need of your prayerful encouragement.
To participate financially in this ministry, were challenging our community to make daily offerings. A pledge of $1/day = $365; $2/day=$730; $5/day= $1825 a year and so on. Think about it. Pray about it. Its a small amount for all the work that is being done day in and day out. As our Lord Jesus says, For wherever your treasure is, there shall your heart be also. (Matt. 6:21) Make youth a priority in your life, by making them a priority in your giving. Your contributions insure the continuity of our ministry.
Pledges may be fulfilled monthly or quarterly by check. Or we can conveniently bill your credit card every month-MasterCard and VISA are accepted.

What's New and What's Not

Making the presence of Christ real in the lives of Armenian youth - that's what we're all about - a continuation of the work begun early in 2003. Our church, the St. Peter Armenian Church & Youth Ministries' Center is located across the street for a cluster of schools in Glendale. This area has been referred to as Ground Zero - it represents one of the largest populations of Armenian youth outside of Armenia. Here God has opened a new door of hope and love for the community. Church services take place throughout the week culminating with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings. Through church activities and a working partnership with In His Shoes, young people are finding significance in their church, communities and in their lives.
