The Sorting Table 92+
2009 Chassagne-Montrachet “Vergers” Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils
The 2009 Vergers is a beautiful bottle in the making, with a very floral and pure aromatic profile. The stunning nose delivers a complex blend of pears, apple, a touch of tangerine, plenty of acacia blossoms, lovely minerality and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and soil-driven, with lovely mid-palate depth, fine focus and cut and a very long, complex and high class
finish. Great juice. 2012-2030+. 92+.
Robert Parker Information Review:
The 2009s were brought in with natural alcohols between 12.5-13%. Moreau told me the fermentations lasted 4-6 months, with no batonnage or racking, and that his goal was to retain as much freshness, which meant using relatively low levels of new oak (30% max for the premier crus.) The wines spent 12 months in oak followed by six months in steel prior to being bottled. This a beautiful set of 2009s. The wines are distinguished by their finesse and exceptional overall balance.
My backstory - in April 2010, my group and I visited this estate with the 2009's in the barrel. Burgundy was excited, energized and new that good things were on the rise. The 2007 whites were released (a great classic white vintage), the 2008's were still finishing malolatic (a good sign for some), and the 2009 vintage was just finished with Malo and exciting already. The town of Chassagne Montrachet is tiny - all the producers are within walking distance and the village is like a trip back in time. The vineyards are impeccable and some are so small, the vines can be counted from the car. If I were a Chardonnay grape, this is were I would want to grow up. The flowers are everywhere and the stony soils speak of the minerality that is the backbone of Chassagne Montrachet - to see it is to faste it… lick the rocks, smell the stony air… feel the wet wind that chills the cool fruit within the vine. Burgundy must of been the juice of many great poems… don't you think?
