Honolulu’s first cargo bike

March 6th, 2012 · Nimzi - Honolulu · No Comments

The nonprofit organization KVIBE (Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange) has ordered a custom made cargo bike by Portland, Oregon company Metrofiets to make their mechanic program mobile. The plan is to extend their warehouse beyond the building by traveling to nearby schools to teach underprivileged youth about bicycles, on a bicycle.  Before heading to its final home at KVIBE, the cargo bike did a bit of sightseeing and racing! KVIBE coordinator Sau Hsu pedaled me around Honolulu and beyond in the cargo load for a few great adventures.

You don’t need a cargo bike to transport giant things in Hawaii.. bicycle surfboard racks do the trick!

The cargo bike is at its new home in Kalihi Valley, about to go on its first official work-related ride on March 17th for the Great Kalihi Cargo Haul. The ride will promote youth cycling by providing up to 100 helmets for kids and encourage the children to work on the land, with the ending point at the Kokua Kalihi Valley nature preserve, Ho’oulu ‘Aina. spacer

Just got back from two weeks of traveling around Cannes, Paris & Amsterdam for work, the weather is pretty cold for me who enjoy my daily life in Jakarta, but of course I still manage to have fun. Taking snap shots of  bicycles everywhere I go, Paris is just lovely, and in Cannes mostly I spotted beach cruiser of course, while Amstedam, just totally a bicycle heaven.

Cielo 11.3.11 CX Racer Tsunami Memorial Bikes

February 10th, 2012 · Rie - Nagoya · No Comments

It’s been almost one year since a massive earthquake and tsunami hit Tohoku in Japan. Cielo (by Chris King) and Sim-Works (from Nagoya) collaborated on making the frames as Tsunami Memorial Bikes.

Text via Cycle EXIF

On the 11th of March 2011, a magnitude 9.0 undersea megathrust earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan, causing 15,846 confirmed deaths, tsunami waves that reached heights of up to 40.5 metres and a World Bank estimated economic cost of US$235 billion, making it the most expensive natural disaster in world history.

It has been reassuring to witness the world uniting around Japan at this devastating and crucial time. Chris King and his Cielo brand have collaborated with their Japanese distributors, Sim-Works, on a limited edition cyclocross bike, with all profits from their sales directed to support of the relief effort.

Chris King needs no introduction: many of the world’s bikes are equipped with his hubs or headsets, but less well known is the fact that he’s also a frame builder of the highest quality, applying the same high standards of engineering to his road and cyclocross frames as his Precision Components. You’ll notice the prominence of the date, 11.3.11 on the frame and forks, a poignant reminder of not only the catastrophic day but also as a call to action to the great and resilient people of Japan.

Only 5 of these frames have been made: the Extra Small size has been sold already, and, at the time of printing, there are only 2 models left in Small and 2 models left in Medium. Secure your chance to contribute to Japan’s relief effort and own a finely tuned and specified cyclocross bike from a legend of cycling, Chris King: contact Cielo in the United States or Sim-Works in Japan.
