Attention climbers:
As of Monday, January 5, we will begin re-testing anyone wishing to belay with an ATC/climb with a figure 8 AND/OR lead climb/belay. Climbers will be required to have their certification card visible at all times while climbing or belaying.
This testing will apply to everyoneyes, even our own staff. It is to ensure that every climber has demonstrated proper belaying and climbing technique at the level for which they are certified.
For climbing on non-Gri-Gri ropes, a climber must show:
· his/her harness is properly fitted
· a dressed, re-traced figure eight
· initiation of belay commands
· a controlled fall
ATC tests will require belayer to:
· show that his/her harness is properly fitted
· load the device properly
· use a correct belay hand motion
· maintain proper tension
· catch an unexpected fall
· lower at an appropriate speed.
Lead climbing will require a climber to:
· show his/her harness is properly fitted
· tie a dressed, re-traced figure eight
· climb a 5.8 or higher (to show that climber can make correct safety choices when fatigued)
· clip all quickdraws, in order, in the correct direction (no back-clipping or Z-clipping)
· take a controlled fall
· clip both anchors at the finish of the climb
Lead belayers must:
· show that his/her harness is properly fitted
· load the device properly (ATC or Gri Gri)
· spot climber before first clip
· choose an appropriate place to stand while belaying
· remain attentive to his/her climber
· maintain minimal amount of slack- rope must not touch ground
· keep control of brake strand
· catch a leader fall without losing control
· lower at an appropriate speed
