Presently a professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Sydney, Blakely is a native Californian now regarded as one of the world’s leading experts in reconstruction and urban and regional planning. He served as the director of New Orleans’ recovery planning in the two years following hurricane Katrina. Earlier, he was instrumental in the recovery process in New York City following the Sept 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, working with the New School University and Regional Planning Association in their community planning approach to recovery. In Oakland, Blakely served as policy adviser to the mayor he was involved in the recovery efforts following the 1989 Lora Prieta earthquake and 1991 fire. The Edward J.
