Mountain Lion and 6000 series

So Mountain Lion brought us alot of new graphic support. Most interesting is native support for 69xx cards! If you have a Mac Pro, all you need to do is to flash your card and it will run fine in Mountain Lion, no cold boot bug or anything. You can flash 6000 series using the special Zeus 6000 series version found It will even work in Mac Pro 1.1 / 2.1!
For hackintoshers, it’s a bit more complicated. The bootloaders need added support for ML and 6000 series. And cold boot bug is still present. Research is still going on though.
Personally I’m just hoping we can port these ML drivers to Lion so we can get support soon, not 6 months from now or whenever ML is released.

Today, Trim Enabler appeared at the front page of my favorite tech-blog, Gizmodo:
What better way to celebrate this then pushing a new update?
This new version of Trim Enabler (2.1) enables you to select any of your disk, be it SSD or hard drive, in the S.M.A.R.T view.
You can update your Trim Enabler by selecting Trim Enabler->Look for updates… or download it fresh from the page: Trim Enabler.
Remember, if you are going to patch for Trim, you have to take the .app out of the DMG first!
Mac Pro 1,1 / 2,1 and Mountain Lion

So when Mountain Lion Preview was released the other day, many Mac Pro users started going crazy that their machines were not supported.
Although the Mac Pro 1,1 / 2,1 have been supported by OSX longer then the other Mac models, they are perfectly fine in terms of performance even today. 4 CPU cores and many gigs of ram should be fine for any OS, one could think. But Apple just does not want anything to do with it.
So what do we do? We fix it ourselves!
The fear was that ML only had 64-bit kernel, which Mac Pro can not boot because it lacks 64-bit EFI. But as netkas forum poster Jamie discovered, this is not the case, atleast not in the Preview version.
You can try out the Mountain Lion OSX on Mac Pro 1,1 today by following Jamies guide:

And let’s hope nothing changes for the ultimate release.
Trim Enabler and 10.7.3

If you get your Trim disabled by installing 10.7.3 update, just use Trim Enabler to re-enable. It works just fine in 10.7.3. Trim Enabler will patch your new kext. If you don’t lose support, then you are fine and you don’t need to do anything
Also, I discovered a “bug” with Trim Enabler 2.0, you can’t launch the app from the .DMG, if you do, nothing will happen when you use the slider. This is because Trim Enabler can’t get permissions from within the DMG. I will make so next version gives you a message to pull the app out of the DMG before you use it.

So I finally got a couple of hours to work on Trim Enabler, and the result is Beta 5.
I have rewritten alot of the code from scratch because it was bad design, and I have used some tricks I learned while making Kext Drop.
Beta 5 features are:
If people can test and confirm this version works well (especially you who experienced crasches with b4) I will conclude testing and release it as final 2.0 version.

about 7970 and Mac Pro

7970 is officially released (for PC) and since a new Mac Pro is imminent, people are wondering if (and when!) we will finally see a new Mac Pro launch with a brand new GPU inside it. There is also alot of questions whether 7970 will work in older Mac Pro’s, either Apple card or PC one through flashing. Here’s my thoughts on it.
There are references of Radeon 7900 found (by netkas) in beta 10.7.3 drivers. They seem to be early addition of new support (addition of “tahiti” identifiers function calls), not enough to run cards it seems. The identifiers are of desktop card models, so they don’t refer to iMac mobility cards. That could mean that Apple might be testing card in 2012 Mac Pro, getting ready for release.
No doubt Apple will label the cards as “2010/2012 Mac Pro compatible only” in the Apple Store, but there is really nothing technical that prevents these cards from being used in older Mac Pro’s. They will probably be bottlenecked in the 2006 and 2007 Mac Pro with PCIe 16x though.
We don’t know how 7000 series will behave in terms of EFI though. ATI (AMD) has so far released all their cards with EBC (EFI 32bit and 64 bit, aka also works in old Mac Pro’s). As for converting PC cards, PC 4870 and 5870 had to be flashed to boot at all, 6870 suddenly started booting without flash (but no bootscreen). We’ll just have to see how that plays out.
So when can someone be certain that support for 7000 series will be implemented in OSX? Well that’s easy. In time for it being released in Mac computers ofc. I strongly believe Mac Pro 2012 will use 7000 series, mainly because a. It’s released and b. 6000 series are not manufactured anymore. The 7970 is a insanely powerful card, and has great power management. Apple has no reason not to choose it. If it releases, it will probably be an upgrade/BTO, and the 7870 would probably be the base card.
I will be preparing some good resources for the site in regards to flashing in time for the debut of the 7970 on the Mac Pro.

New menu section – Software
Added page about Kext Drop (under construction)
Finally added page about Trim Enabler
I’ve had many emails and comments about how trim works in OSX and “do I need it for SSD xxxx”, so I’m working on a “Trim Guide” for OSX that will hopefully clear things up!
Happy new year!

So when developing Trim Enabler I have been juggling back and forth with kexts and I often find that the kext installers out there are either cluttered with features I don’t use or are prone to crashing. So I decided to make my own Kext installer!
You can find it at the Software section:
