How many and who should be included on your reference list?

Some people believe previous bosses are best on your reference list. Some prefer customers and subordinates. A few even like personal references. Your best list may include all of these acquaintances.

What's most important is how you develop the best list, and then use it well. A good tool to use is called a reference matrix. It should contain as few as 10, and as many as 15 to 18 individuals.

Think of a reference matrix like a map. When planning a trip, there may be 20 ways to get you to your final destination.
