Tony is unquestionably one of Portland’s most recognizable designer names. Tony and his designs were featured on VH1 and Howard Stern and he is one of the most talked about people in the close knit fashion community. Tony said” Portland is a place where people can come and live however they want,” perhaps a perfect place for a fashion rebel like Tony to build his own unique brand.

Tony is no overnight success he worked hard to shape and build his brand in the early years but his great ability to network allowed him to pull together talented teams and resources most people take years to develop. Now upon graduation from the Art Institute of Portland this summer Tony’s fashions will be distributed worldwide thanks in part to his team at HNH. This is a stark contrast to most recent college grades who are struggling just to find any job let alone create a company that will employee others and help support the economy. In fact, according to a poll conducted by consulting firm Twentysomething Inc. 85% of college students plan on moving back home with Mom and Dad, which is a little different then launching an international fashion line.

Tony will be the first to admit that mentorship has played a big role in his life, from his current business mentor Tony Bash of HNH to former NFL football player and PSU Hall of Famer Tracey Eaton who mentored Tony for about a year on some business ventures and personal success. Over time Tony developed his speaking and presentations skills, solidified his brand and grew into the man he is today. The most significant mentor in his life however may be the one woman who always believed in him, his mother LeeAnn Peniche.

As a single mother she struggled in their early years to make ends meet, today she is asked to speak and consult around the world and her firm is top ranked in the health care industry having helped over 2500 clients achieve better results for their medical practices.

PIECING IT ALL TOGETHERspacer

In 2008 Tony interned with Bill Blass New York and attended New York Fashion Week. It was there he met another mentor that guided his fashion aspirations and offered up key contacts for the young designer. Jose Solis is currently works with some of the hottest brands in the nation but when he met Tony he was working for Bill Blass NY. It was then he helped Tony expand his view of fashion and business. Jose shared his decades of fashion know how with Tony who in turn ran with it to enhance his own fashion endeavors.

Tony’s first cut and sew line told a story and gave media and consumers a glimpse of the showmanship and passion Tony would bring to future creations. His debut run was a success, selling out quickly and leaving local buyers and store owners asking “what’s next?” Tony went on to develop a controversial edgy screen-printing line that started to generate a buzz that had not been seen before in the local fashion scene.

When his fashion first hit the runway Tony was the youngest designer to ever show at Portland Fashion Week. Tony’s success in men’s fashion even inspired his celebrity sister Kari Ann Peniche to pursue a career in women’s fashion somewhere between her “Playboy” Spread, stent on “Celebrity Rehab” and ultimately settling down to get married.

Besides inspiring his sister Tony has become an inspiration to many Portland based designers and talent. Tony has utilized up and coming models in his campaign, many of which leveraged the exposure to start careers in the fashion industry. Tony has never been afraid to support others and contribute to their success. On February 28th 2009 Tony displayed a mixture of his previous collections at a charity fashion show for Alexander Martinez an event that rose over $23,000.

GOING GLOBAL

On March 30th 2010 Tony and Portland’s top fashion delegates flew to China to help establish international relations between Portland’s designers and Chinese manufacturers. While there Tony showed his Fall collection to China’s top media networks and the fashion association of China.

Tony shared about his international experience, “When I went to China I realized that the fashion world was much bigger than I thought it was. It was actually massive, it was global.”

spacer Today Tony is taking his fashion in a fresh new direction. The new manifestation the “Peniche” brand will provide wearers with a “poetic statement of individualism, comfort, and sex appeal”.

What’s next for “Peniche”? Tony shared, “You can expect to see a big expansion; a big push for big business done right. We are going to be smart about it; have some good ethics behind our business but we are going to expand like crazy.”

With a reality show in the works and a growing fashion line and production company under his belt we expect to see a lot more from this Portland-based designer who has never been afraid to rebel against average and ordinary.

We asked Tony for a final thought for those people pursing their passion whether that be to create garments, launch TV shows or just be significant. Tony shared, “Please don’t ever lose the fire! When I look in your eyes, I want to see excitement for life and love! It’s never too late, so never give up!”
