It was lovely in the spring and fall, but winters were often cruel with tundra-lie cold and heavy lake-effect snows which dumped over a 100 inches a year. But the real hazard was ice. It gathered on roofs, sidewalks and roads and presented dangerous challenges to walking and driving. The invisible "black ice" was the real danger, and many of us learned the hard way to respect winter's dangers, as well as its' beauty.

In the past months a new kind of ice is forming on our collective consciousness. In life as in winter, ice coats and freezes every surface. It also distorts and deflects our vision, and adds a not-so-subtle danger to our life. The Greeks said we suffer our way to wisdom. If that is true, we should be far wiser than our behavior would suggest.

The black ice of deception and abuse hit me this past week. The atrocity of the charges of alleged sexual abuse by a Penn State coach stunned the university and the nation, and brought down Joe Paterno, his boss, after a 46-year reign as head football coach along with the firing of the university's president. The spectacular rise and fall of fabled leaders under the heavy ice of deception left scars on both the victims the university's sports legacy. More alleged victims are emerging from the shadows, and a chorus of passionate and angry alumni are asking for the leaders in their "idyllic Central Pennsylvania" Happy Valley to get out of the way and let them take over.

Like the Wall Street protests that spawned demonstrations in cities across America, there is a sense that the hard ice that has protected the greediest and most dishonest among us is under siege. And the persistent struggles of European Central Bank with the governments of Italy and Greece to bring some measure of control to their profligate spending which has put the central currency at profound risk, with inevitable cascades of recession and market collapse, is more turmoil beneath the ice. All the while the US Congress' "Super Committee" is in hiding and denial, under the black ice of partisan wrangling.

One can't help but find other chilling examples of abusers of the weak and innocent in the priest scandals in the Catholic Church, or in the simple fact that in Omaha where I live, smack in the heartland of America, our Project Harmony's CEO reports that last year their Child Protection Center provided services for 2,300 children, with an astounding 60 percent (nearly 1400) reporting abuse. Herbert Ward reminds us that "child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime."

Beneath the black ice of our denial and rationalizations, along with our collective self-deception that doesn't allow "unpleasant" news to someone be real to us, we pay a high price if we don't confront that all of us are somehow complicit if we don't act. We must melt the ice with honesty and speak out when you discover a victim...child, spouse, employee, associate...being unfairly abused by someone more powerful.

It's a choice. Living life with gusto and responsibility requires a large measure of bravery...to face uncertainty, fear, ambiguity, loss and change. Instead of spending time keeping score, airing grievances and rationalizing why were are somehow less than what we should be, I invite all of us to translate the hum of our thoughts into a commitment to be braver and more generous in all things this Holiday season. Let's lament less and love more.

In doing so with intention, we become a sun that can melt the ice around us.

But I've had enough
of turning to look back, the old
post-mortemi
