Trim Enabler

spacer

Trim is must-have feature for most Solid State Drives. It not only increases data writing speeds, but it increases the lifetime of the SSD itself. With Trim Enabler, you can bring that feature to Mac OSX. It’s as easy as flipping a switch.

Trim Enabler can also analyze your drive and show information about it’s health and show lifetime statistics.

Features:

Trim
With Trim Enabler, you can enable Trim for third party Solid State Drives in Mac OSX. Trim is a command that is executed in the background by the operative system when you delete files, informing the SSD that the blocks are no longer in use and can be deleted. By doing this, the SSD can avoid slowing down future write operations to those blocks.

S.M.A.R.T
Using the S.M.A.R.T monitoring system, Trim Enabler let’s you view information that is relevant to the health of the drive. Solid State Drives do not last forever, but by using the S.M.A.R.T tool you can detect issues such as rapidly increasing amount of written data, and increase the lifetime of your SSD.

I’ma little confused. The current version is 1.1 or 1.2? The new version will be 2.0, and use a different method?

Forgot to mention some details: My machine is a mid-2010 MacBook Pro running 10.7.1. My SSD is a Corsair Force GT 120 GB. The TRIM Enabler has been working perfectly after crashing the first two times after the restart.

    Hi Oskar,

Trim Enabler appears to be the answer to my ssd solution, but I do have a question. I have a vintage MBP v1,1 Core Duo 2006, running OSX 10.6.8. and I was wondering if Trim Enabler would be compatible my laptop , OSX version and an OCZ Agility 3?

Thanks for your time and effort,
    Adrian!

BTW, I have two of those in my MBP (the DVD has been removed spacer and the tool only lists one. Would be great if it listed both spacer

It is because you have only 32bit CPU. Trim Enabler only supports 64-bit CPU unfortunately.

    Hi,

I have a MacBook Air Rev. A with OSX 10.7.2, upgraded with a RunCore 64GB Pro IV 1.8″ PATA ZIF PLUS SSD with Trim Support.

I installed Trim Enabler 2.0 successfully, however when I enable it, the following message is displayed; “The patch is active but Trim is not. I can’t seem to detect your SSD though, to make sure Trim is enabled, Check System Information ..”

The Trim Enabler S.M.A.R.T. Information display shows the following:
Drive Model – RunCore 64G-C SSD
    Model Family – ?
    Firmware Version – 2030s
    Serial number – 1104xxxxxx
    S.M.A.R.T. support – Enabled

The OSX System Information shows the same information under the “ATA Bus” section (not “Serial-ATA”), however there is no Trim Support attribute listed.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    —Bob

Bob, try fsck in single user mode. You can then see if blocks are being trimed.

    Replace rdisk0s2 with your SSD.

    Hey Oskar,

First of all – thank you very much for your hard work. You deserve my donation. spacer

I have a 64GB Samsung 830 in my early 2011 15″ MBP. I noticed that none of my drive information, including the recording of reads, writes, errors, and retired blocks are all “?”. Are these an expected update?

Also, I turned Trim off, hoping that an “off and on” would maybe detect the drive. But when I turned it off it says that “Trim Enabler is off, but Trim is still enabled. You must have an Apple drive…” which is not the case. I’d appreciate any insight.

Thanks again for the great app!

    Joel

OS X 10.7.3 was just released and updating means I’ll have to reapply TRIM Enabler. Can you confirm is TRIM Enabler 2.0 fully compatible with OS X 10.7.3 (and other future updates as well, 10.7.x)?

    Cheers,
    Raili

    Yup, it works.

If any update breaks Trim Enabler so patching won’t work, Trim Enabler will simply notify you that it was unable to patch.

Funny, I just updated to 10.7.3, rebooted and checked the TRIM status from “System Information” and it shows TRIM support is enabled even though I haven’t applied TRIM Enabler yet.

Does this mean that 10.7.3 has enabled TRIM support for 3rd party drives or does it simply mean that 10.7.3 did not replace the file that TRIM Enabler patches? I’m curious because after 10.7.2 update I had to reapply TRIM Enabler…

Thanks for bringing this to my attention raili.

I investigated this by disabling Trim on my 10.7.2 MPB with Corsair SSD, then updating to 10.7.3. Trim was still disabled.

Maybe it is because your kext cache still contains the patched version of the kext. I’m not really sure how the kext cache works, but sometimes I’ve experienced that replacing kexts does not give instant effect until you repair permissions. So you can try that to see if your system “hooks on” to the 10.7.3, unpatched kext.

Or it is possible you did not recieve a new kext from the update, it could be not all system updates works the same for all the Mac models.

I tried repairing permissions but it still shows that TRIM support is enabled. My computer is iMac 27″ (mid-2010). I suppose there’s no need to reapply TRIM Enabler if the TRIM support is already enabled.

I just installed TrimEnabler (MacPro 1,1 with SL10.6.8).
    “Everything looks super.” spacer

    One idea for future improvement:

When I click on the SMART stats, I see the status of one of my hard drives (I have 3 HDs and an M4 SSD in my Computer. The SSD is connected to one of the two additional SATA connectors on the motherboard. Not to one of the 4 drive bays).

It would be a cool feature if you could select the drive for which the SMART status will be displayed…

I had previously enabled TRIM on 10.7.3 using the older version (1.1) and it worked, but I decided to restore the original kext using your procedure and re-enabled TRIM via 2.0, which also worked perfectly! Thanks for your efforts.
