16-17. July 2011
The old spinning mill, which is currently under reconstruction, will open its doors for two summer days, the artMUSE Festival in Bolcholt. artMUSE is the very first event taking place at the almost renovated spinning mill. Therefore the curatorial concept is strongly based on the venue’s atmosphere and its future role in forming the culture of Bocholt and the region. The spinning mill was the witness of industrial revolution, the flourish of textile industry; it was abandoned as the postindustrial and digital revolution made it economically inefficient and finally useless. The artist invited to artMUSE Festival are all reflecting on this phenomena, the changes brought by digital revolution in the society , the industry culture and the region’s everyday life. The invited artists using the tools of new media, basically digital equipment to evoke different segments of the above mentioned historical and present issues. Furthermore the artworks are “woven through” with references to textile.
The Spinning Mill in Bocholt
A forum of the History of Textile
Introduction
The LWL-Museum of Industrial Culture with its eight houses in Westfalen-Lippe in Northwest Germany is focusing on the region’s historical and present industrial culture. As the first and biggest museum of its kind in Germany it preserves and documents the working environment by the remained industrial buildings, technical equipment and everyday life artefacts. The museum also provides a forum for culture, creativity and innovation. As an expansion of the consisting Textile Museum in Bocholt, the old Spinning Mill will provide exhibitions, panel discussions and presentations on history, present and future of textile as well as the art and culture of textile. Through music and many other cultural events exciting networks will be created to form a multi coloured fabric – a forum for the history of Textile.
The transformation
The 100 years old spinning mill will be fulfilled with new life by the museum’s curatorial concept and by the transformation of the building itself. Following the demand to combine old and new, this architectural concept is realized by the Brückner Studio with partners from Stuttgart. Hence the traces of the mill’s 100 year history are conserved in contrast with the new structures. As a result the specific play of colours of the 1960es, for example, is standing beside the clear formed cube of the museum shop or the modern seating of the function room. Nowadays, this area is being cut through by the dynamic forms of the new stairway, which builds a new axe for the Spinning Mill. So the building itself is tensed between old and new, present and future, making a contribution to the extraordinary atmosphere, that offers space for innovation, creativity and culture.
Museum as a forum
It will be one of the major tasks to transform textile themes into exciting exhibitions. Textile industry had a fundamental role of in the beginning of industrial revolution and it has important impact on our presence, therefore textile as a museological topic suits the venue. Furthermore the Spinning Mill will house different activities connected to various fields, such as science, art and culture, craft and industry. These will interact and create a new dimension of creative potentials.
