When Nathan and Paul were playing baseball together in high school, dating rarely came up. In the small suburban town of Marshall, you could count the number of openly gay kids on a shop teacher’s right hand, and the subject was strictly taboo in parental circles unless you were praying for lost souls. That was just how it was.
Paul had figured it out after finding a shoebox full of cut-out pictures of men from magazines and books under a pile of clothes in Nathan’s bedroom closet. He had been looking for a glove that he had lent Nathan a couple of months back and had pried open the lid of the box before even thinking about privacy. Paul gulped when he saw the pictures. Some of the photos were of naked male statues, obviously torn from the pages of a library book.
Nathan was halfway through the door when he saw Paul with the shoebox kneeling on the floor of his closet, and froze.
“Those are for my art drawings,” Nathan said, his voice half a whisper. As he said it Paul could tell that he realized how lame the planned excuse was. His eyes fell away from Paul’s, his jaw clenched, and his ears turned a bright red. Paul had never seen Nathan–calm, collected Nathan– so upset.
