The Sainsbury Laboratory
The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) is located at the John Innes Centre (JIC) in Norwich. The Laboratory favours daring, long-term research and is housed in a modern building with access to state of the art technologies and support services to enable cutting-edge science.Our main goals are:
- To make fundamental discoveries in the science of plant-microbe interactions
- To build on fundamental scientific research and deliver science solutions that reduce crop losses to important diseases
- To provide an outstanding training environment that prepares scientists who pass through the laboratory to excel in their careers
Both the Sainsbury Laboratory and John Innes Centre are world-class centres for plant and microbial sciences. Due to their size and scope, they have excellent research facilities, particularly in the platform technologies that underpin modern molecular biology. As a result, TSL and JIC have an outstanding record of publications in high profile journals.

Applications open for the Undergraduate Summer Programme
Applications are now open for the International Undergraduate Summer Research Training Programme. The 8 week programme is co-hosted by The John Innes Centre, The Sainsbury Laboratory and The Genome Analysis Centre and provides UK and non-UK students with the unique opportunity to spend the summer of 2012 on the Norwich campus.

Plant immunity discovery boosts chances of disease-resistant crops
Professor Jonathan Jones of the Sainsbury Laboratory is part of a research group, the European Union Effectoromics Consortium, which has contributed to research uncovering new aspects of the plant immune system.

PRESS NOTICE OF ANTI-GM EVENT
Scientists from The Sainsbury Laboratory conducting a research trial of blight-resistant GM potatoes invited anti-GM campaigners planning a “photo shoot” in Norwich to take part in a debate. The invitation has been declined and instead campaigners plan to “deliver” some potatoes to the John Innes Centre, beside the TSL site, and to hold a “rally”.

Awards for TSL PhD students
Two TSL PhD students have recently been awarded John Innes Foundation prizes for their outstanding work. Liliana Cano received the Excellence in Science Communication Award and Ben Schwessinger received the Excellence in Scientific Research Award. Well deserved congratulations to both!
