After a lot of speculation regarding leaked Vista prices on the Microsoft Canada site last week, Amazon.com has openly announced the prices…and the release date.

At the end of long and winding road that was the development of Windows Vista, Vista speculators have finally been given some closure with some final prices, and a final release date of January 30th. Earlier this week Amazon.com posted pre-release product listings for each piece of the Windows Vista lineup, and the prices aren’t far from what was expected:

  • Windows Vista Home Basic, $199/$99.95
  • Windows Vista Home Premium, $239/$159
  • Windows Vista Business, $299/$199
  • Windows Vista Ultimate, $399/$259

While the prices of Vista Ultimate and Business are slightly higher than expected, the Home Basic and Home Premium versions show no change from their comparable versions of Windows XP. Why Vista decided to go ultra-complicated with upwards of ten different versions of the operating system is beyond me, but after years of delayed release dates, failed deadlines, and unfulfilled promises, the next-gen Vista OS is finally on the calendar.

Let’s not forget the time in the Vista development cycle when the Windows Future File System was dropped, along with a number of other promised features that went unrealized. But with a very polished Vista RC1 under their belt, Microsoft can breathe easy and spend these last few months on Vista’s performace. Coming from a guy who once doubted there would ever be a decent Longhorn build, Vista is in much better shape than anyone could have hoped after a dismal and uncertain production period.
