My New Search Site: Search Engine Land

In News On My Plans For Next Year, I said that I would be starting a new search blog. I now have more news on that to pass along, it will be called Search Engine Land, located at searchengineland.com. I plan to continue writing about search with original content as well as commenting about the search news of the day. Joining me with be Chris Sherman and Barry Schwartz. The site launches December 11. For more about what will come, please see the Search Engine Land site itself.

Stonehenge & Salisbury Cathedral Pics

I'm jumping on a plane in a few hours to head out to Las Vegas for PubCon. So it's clear off the camera time before I depart, to make sure what happens in Vegas shows up on Flickr. Among my clearing out photos are some snaps of Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral. Rebecca Kelley from SEOmoz is over here in the UK, so I gave her a whirlwind tour this Saturday of our local sights. Some pics, for those who are interested.

AdSense & EFT Payments In Non-US Currencies

As anyone can see, I run AdSense here on Daggle. It's more for playing and seeing how it works than any big money maker. At some point, I've promised Jennifer Slegg to go onto her Click This! podcast and throw all my AdSense newbie questions her way. There are so many things I find odd about how it works. This post is about one of those, trying to get paid in US dollars if you're not based in the US.

Search Engines, Permissions & Moving Forward In Copyright Battles

I've been promising a long look at copyright, search engines in general and Google in particular in the wake of recent conflicts between Google and some newspapers and other content owners. A quote in a New York Times article today -- implying that Google doesn't get copyright permission -- finally pushed me forward with my own look. Below, a revisit to the important difference between indexing and reprinting, how robots.txt works right now as a permissions system, why Google should stop scanning in-copyright books and the leadership role it could play by dropping cached pages.

A Struggle Over Dominance and Definition is the New York Times article that looks at Google and whether it is a media company that conflicts with other media owners, especially in terms of using content from others without permission. It's a good article, covering common themes that have been going on for literally years.

Is Google a media company? The word from Google in the article remains a firm no, pretty similar to how Google cofounder Sergey Brin talked about still being a technology company when I put the same question to him back in 2003.

Regardless of what Google thinks, I consider them a media company, whether they own the content or not. My Schmidt: Google Still A Tech Company Despite The Billboards article from early this year looks in more depth at my reasons why.

Is Google a copyright violator? The answer is largely unknown, given that the laws have yet to catch up with actions. Google will say no; some say yes; it can also depend on the case, and it ultimately remains for a lot of courts to decide.

Techmeme & Fast Look At Other Meme Trackers

Technically, Friday is my day off. No search blogging for me. But while I work on other stuff, I can't help but keep an eye on the news. Unfortunately, my favorite site to summarize what's going on, Techmeme, has felt sluggish of late.

Consistently this week, I've seen stories (from across the blogosphere) that normally (in my opinion) would have hit within a few hours take a day or longer. Not in every case, but generally it has felt sluggish. Maybe it's just me. If not, I know Gabe who runs the site will get it humming along in short order. But it did prompt me to take a look at a few other meme trackers.

Unexpected Building Society Windfalls

When I first came to live in Britain about 10 years ago, there was a wave of building societies being turned into banks -- and cash windfalls for the building society shareholders. Building societies are the UK name for what those in the US call credit unions. That wave came and passed, but a mini-wave has just hit again, giving me a windfall for the first time.

Maui's Green Sea Turtles & Other Diving Pictures

spacer

With the heater going next to me here in Britain, the thought that I was in the warmth of Maui only a week ago, well, sniff! But it wasn't a dream -- I was there and in fact did a lot of snorkeling and one dive. I got to see Maui's green sea turtles on two occasions.

The first turtle spotting was during an actual dive. I learned to dive over 10 years ago on my big trip that I'll someday finish writing about. I highly recommend it to anyone. For me, it's the closest I'll ever come to being in outer space, I imagine. It's amazing to spin on your back and look safely up through the water at the sky and see the sunlight shimmering down. But most of the action is looking down and around, at the sea creatures below.

I used to just snorkel, and it's certainly a lot easier. I was thrilled when both my young sons got the hang of it with me on this trip. Our smallest would see fish and shout out in amazement through his snorkel, making my wife and I laugh to here the noise coming forth.
