spacer Can't Afford Vista Hardware/Software? Think again
spacer Can't Afford Vista Hardware/Software? Think again
By Jeff Rosado
November 20,2006

It has been said by many people that Windows Vista is just too expensive in terms of the cost of the OS software, and the hardware needed to run it. If you have an older machine and want to upgrade it, this may be true when you figure in the cost of a retail copy of Vista, and the needed hardware upgrades. However, why spend all that money upgrading, when you can easily get a new computer that runs Vista for less than cost of upgrading your old machine?

Case in point - I recently bought a budget laptop for my wife (at Walmart of all places), the cost was $398 USD, and it came with an AMD Sempron 3300, 15.4" Widescreen, 60 GB Hard Drive, 512 MB RAM, and integrated ATI Express 200M graphics. It had MCE 2005 preinstalled, and came with an upgrade coupon for Windows Vista Home Premium.

Now, I was a bit skeptical of how well this machine would upgrade and run Windows Vista Home Premium, and as I have access t...spacer

spacer Newspaper Consortium Partners With Yahoo
spacer 176 newspapers form partnership with Yahoo
By Miguel Helft and Steve Lohr
November 20, 2006, 4:50 AM

A consortium of seven newspaper chains representing 176 daily papers across the country on Monday announced a broad partnership with Yahoo to share content, advertising and technology, another sign that the wary newspaper business is increasingly willing to shake hands with the technology companies they once saw as a threat.

In the first phase of the deal, the newspaper companies will begin posting their employment classified ads on Yahoo's classified jobs site, HotJobs, and start using HotJobs technology to run their own online career ads. But the long-term goal of the alliance with Yahoo, according to one senior executive at a participating newspaper company, is to be able to have the content of these newspapers tagged and optimized for searching a...spacer

spacer 'Check Point Software' To Buy Project Data
spacer Check Point to buy Swedish security company
November 20, 2006, 5:08 AM PST

Check Point Software Technologies, one of the world's largest Internet security companies, on Monday said it would buy data security company Protect Data for about $586 million. The deal values Stockholm, Sweden-based Protect Data at 180 Swedish crowns per share.

Protect Data's shares closed at 175.50 crowns ($24.79) on Friday. Protect Data's board of directors unanimously recommends the offer, and it is also supported by Protect Data's largest shareholder, Monterro Holding, which owns 10.46 percent of the company. Protect Data is the owner of Pointsec Mobile Technologies.

Israel-based Check Point said the proposed acquisition of Pointsec, a provider of data security on laptop and desktop PCs, PDAs and smart phones, was the first step in its strategy to secure all enterprise ...spacer

spacer MySpace Being Sued By Universal Music
spacer Universal Music Group sues MySpace
By Eric Bangeman
November 17, 2006 @ 4:23:12 PM

Universal Music has filed a lawsuit against MySpace, accusing the popular social-networking site of copyright infringement. At issue are the thousands of music videos uploaded by MySpace users.

In its complaint filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, Universal accuses MySpace of complicity in its users' infringement by reformatting the videos for playback once they are uploaded. The lawsuit pits two titans against one another. MySpace is owned by News Corp., which counts Fox and DirecTV among its assets.

Universal is a property of French company Vivendi Group. Given the parties involved, this battle could prove to be a long and costly one, no matter what the outcome. MySpace characterized the lawsuit as "meritless" in a press release, sa...spacer

spacer Wii NYC: The Line Starts Here
spacer Wii NYC: The line starts here
By Tim Surette, GameSpot
Nov 17, 2006 3:53 pm PT

Gamers' attention slowly turns toward Wii after much-hyped PS3 launch; modest Wii line begins outside Nintendo World Store.

NEW YORK--The North American PlayStation 3 launch may have already come and gone, but for US gamers, one of the most epic weekends in history is only half done. The Nintendo Wii makes its worldwide debut this Sunday, with the official launch party beginning late Saturday night at the Toys "R" Us store in New York's Times Square. Still, much of the air of excitement was released Thursday night and Friday morning, with mainstream media concentrating largely on the PS3's much-hyped (and occasionally violent) launch.

In contrast to the limited supplies of the pricy PS3 on Friday, Nintendo is expected to have a considerable supply of its $250 co...spacer

spacer Review: Black Irish
spacer Black Irish
A new benchmark in the coming-of-age genre
by Larry Richman

I attended the World Premiere of "Black Irish" at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Initially, the blurb in the program guide suggested a fairly formulaic coming-of-age drama. But looks can be deceiving, and the synopsis just barely scratches the surface of what is, in reality, one of the most complex, rich, and heartwarming stories I've seen in quite some time. Remember those drawings in art class? The ones where the page is covered with black crayon and as you scrape off the outer layer you find multicolored wonders underneath? That's the most apt description that can be applied to "Black Irish." Because, as you'll discover, nothing is at it seems. And that is the singular achievement of Brad Gann, directing from his own script, with an ensemble cast that lends suc...spacer
