spacer About CoolEmAll Project

Welcome to CoolEmAll.

The EC-funded project has been underway since October 2011.

The aim of the project is to approach the complex problem of improving datacenter efficiency from a number of angles.

The CoolEmAll consortium plans to take a holistic approach to improving datacenter energy efficiency that includes not just the role of IT hardware or facilities equipment but also the applications they ultimately support.

The participants in the 30-month project include a number of supercomputing and environmental research centers groups, as well as representatives from industry.

The expected results of the project include:

  • Datacenter monitoring, simulation and visualisation software (SVD Toolkit)
  • Blueprints/designs of energy efficient IT hardware
  • Contribute to existing (and help define new) energy efficiency metrics.

By coming at the problem of datacenter efficiency from a number of angles the CoolEmAll consortium hopes to develop solutions beyond the scope of other projects or industry efforts.

The CoolEmAll project may have only been underway for approximately six months but it is already attracting attention. We recently issued a press release that explained the energy efficiency goals of CoolEmAll in context of the recent announcement from the European Commission that it would be doubling investment in High Performance computing (HPC). That announcement received a lot of...

EC doubles investment in High-Performance Computing
2/16/12 9:32 AM
The European Commission has announced a plan to establish Europe as a leader in High Performance Computing (HPC). The EC says it will double its investment in HPC (from €630 million to €1.2 billion). Half of the investment would be for development and training and for new centres of excellence, creating thousands of jobs, the EC has said. The CoolEmAll project, along with other...

What's ahead for CoolEmAll in 2012?
1/5/12 4:35 PM
2012 will be a significant year for CoolEmAll as the project really gets underway. A lot of the significant technical work is already progressing well but there is still obviously a very long way to go. To guide this work as well as the overall direction of the project we have been recruiting an advisory panel of datacenter experts to make sure that what we produce is in line not only...
