    Vegetation

    spacer  Print This Page

spacer The temperate climate of Sicily has contributed to the development of typically Mediterranean vegetation. Vineyards, olive and citrus (lemons, mandarins, ciders, oranges) trees are throughout the island. Various species of plants grow naturally, such as: dwarf palm, mirto, corbezzolo, lentisco, oleanders, eucalyptus, pine trees and euphorbia. In the driest parts you can find plants such as palms, cards, agaves and prickly pears. Trees of almonds, hibiscus, and plants of mimosas, bougainvilleas, zagaras, jasmines and capers add to the Sicilian landscape’s unforgettable colors.

Sicily counts a variety of national parks, the most famous of which is Mount Etna. These reserves are home to species such as vanessa butterflies, wildcats, foxes, wolves, porcupines, martens, golden eagle, falcons, lizards and green woodpeckers. The marshy coastline around Trapani is populated by flamingoes.
