Dana White: "Soccer is for pussies!"
Dana White sat down with the Calgary Sun while in Canada and big-upped our national sport hockey while simultaneoulsy implying soccer was for pussies.
I’m not a big hockey fan. But I respect how talented you have to be to play hockey. Soccer? That’s a whole other ball. Can’t stand soccer. It’s the least-talented sport on Earth. There’s a reason three-year-olds can play soccer. When you’re playing a game when the net is that big and the score is 3-1 (and that’s a blowout) are you kidding me? You know how untalented you have to be to score three times when the net is that big? Now back to hockey. You have guys on skates with crooked sticks and you have to hit a puck into a net that’s the same size as the goalie. And at any time someone could take your head right off your shoulders and it’s perfectly legal. That’s a real sport that takes real talent, speed and all the things you need to be a real athlete. Now fighting is a part of hockey and has been since Day 1. It’s part of the game. It is what it is. I think we live in a world now where everything has been so pussy-fied. When I grew up we didn’t wear helmets when we rode our bikes. We didn’t have car seats. We didn’t have all this stuff. Now things are safer and we should be safer but let’s not go overboard. Fighting’s a part of hockey. Period.
What the hell is Dana White doing??? Doesn't he know he's going to be spending a lot of time down in Brazil, the land of Pussyball? Maybe he'll Romney-bot it when he arrives and say hockey is just figure skating for thugs. Maybe after the UFC spends a bit more time in stadiums rather than arenas he'll start to understand that it's the size of the field that's the deciding factor in scoring, not the net. And soccer isn't full of pussies. Those badasses are always mixing it up.
More examples of the manliest sport in the world right here.

TUF Brazil premieres on the internet this Sunday
TUF Brazil is finally here and will begin airing this Sunday at 11:30PM. But before you start fiddling with your remote trying to figure out where that stupid FUEL channel is hiding (answer: on another cable provider), get this. FUEL isn't showing it. Instead you'll have to go to the TUF.tv website to catch the show.
Meanwhile, FUEL continues to try and ram a dizzying array of UFC news shows down our throat. What is it gonna take to convince FOX execs that we want fights, not talk about fights? Is it so shocking that no matter how slick the production might be, we'd rather see Wanderlei Silva coaching a bunch of crazy Brazilians than some fat sportscaster behind a desk ponying up hype pieces?
I can only imagine the moronic conversation at FUEL that led to this decision. "Well, we could have the first piece of must see international UFC content but that would mean having a show with subtitles, and according to our data UFC fans can't read. Let's stick with more Thrillbillies reruns instead."
Hey, I'm not complaining. This makes it easier for everyone to watch TUF Brazil.

Justin.tv defeats the UFC in court
For those of you on Planet Greenfeedz trembling in terror as the UFC's legal Death Star powers up it's supercannon, not all hope is lost. Not only was my claim that it would be difficult to link accounts and users to people and PPVs referenced in a legal blog (that'll be $5000, you theives), but there is now black and white proof that the UFC isn't always going to win these copyright legal battles.
Two years ago the UFC went after Justin.tv because a bunch of it's users were using it to stream ppv events out to the masses. You'd think this would be a clear cut case where a company has a legit beef that the law should be able to deal with. Haha, not so. Because of the way the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was written, the site isn't responsible for what it's users are up to:
Last year, we wrote about how Zuffa, the parent company of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was suing Justin.tv because some of its users streamed UFC matches. As we noted at the time, we couldn't see how Zuffa would get past the DMCA's safe harbors. Apparently, Zuffa tried to get around that by being way too creative for its own good and the court has now shut down those efforts.
Basically, Zuffa focused on two areas not covered (or not clearly covered) by safe harbors. The first is trademark, which is neither covered by the DMCA's safe harbors nor Section 230's safe harbors -- though, many courts have accepted similar rules that limit liability to third party service providers anyway. In this case, the court is extremely skeptical of the trademark claims, in part because it seemed clear that Zuffa was merely trying to use trademark law as if it were a "mutant copyright law," which courts have rejected in the past.
The other attempt to get around safe harbors was to use the Communications Act, which has rules against "intercepting cable." Justin.tv actually suggested that Section 230's safe harbors should protect it from that claim -- which makes sense -- but the court doesn't want to touch that argument. Instead, it just says that the basic idea that Justin.tv is illegally intercepting cable doesn't make any sense -- and notes, again, that it appears to be Zuffa seeking to do an end-run around copyright law:
"In essence, Zuffa alleges that Justin.tv’s users copied Zuffa’s UFC event and then rebroadcast the UFC event over the internet. This is not the type of conduct properly addressed by the Communications Act, but by copyright law (and, potentially, trademark law) because Justin.tv had no relationship with the original cable or satellite signal: by the allegations, Justin.tv did not receive or intercept any actual cable or satellite signal or broadcast."
See, this is why we needed SOPA, people! Or perhaps something stronger that gives Dana White free access to IP data so he can show up at your house and throttle you with his bare hands for streaming his property.
*UPDATE* So maybe 'defeats' was a slightly strong word to use. 'Partial victory' would be more accurate.

Watch Brian Stann be a hero
We make fun of Brian Stann for being marketed as a Real American Hero so much, but goddamnit he fits the bill. The military didn't give him a medal for most granite-ish jaw (even though they should), but he did get a Silver Star for pulling his battalion through a crazy ambush that almost killed a bunch of them. We've talked about it on the site before, but now UFC Ultimate Insider (or is it Ultimate UFC Insider? ULTIMATE!) has a bunch of footage and audio from the mission. This one goes out to jackal iamphoenix who's deploying to Afghanistan. No coming home without your own collection of Silver Stars. Preferably for something safe like paperwork filing or excellence in latrine duty.

Ronda Rousey will be in this year's ESPN Body Issue
Aaaaw yeah, giggedy giggedy goo!
Ronda Rousey will soon bare (mostly) all in a new photo shoot.
The Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion is expected to be featured in the 2012 edition of ESPN The Magazine's "The Body Issue," multiple sources close to the fighter today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
The issue's release date could not be confirmed, though it could hit stands this fall.
You may remember the Body Issue producing possibly the hottest Gina Carano picture ever taken. Since then the magazine has concentrated more on MMA dudes (Bones, Cyborg), but it sounds like this year they're making up for those shortcomings. No word yet on if Miesha Tate will appear as well or if she's sitting by the phone in a sling waiting for ESPN to call.

Brendan Schaub's cell phone gets blender'd
Man, Brendan Schaub's agent is working overtime. Not only did he land his client a role on the spooktacularly stupid Ghost Adventures, he also set him up to be punked by the 'Will this Blend' guy. For some reason, I don't think Schaub appreciated this one. Watch in amusement as Brendan realizes they're really going to blend his phone into a pile of black dust.

SUPER MEGA FUN TIME UFC NEWS EXPLOSION!
The UFC just wrapped up a press conference in Calgary and here I was expecting them to show up, announce they were coming to Cow Town, trot out some Canadian mid-carders to talk about how exciting coming to Alberta is, and then pack up and leave. But no! Instead we've got some pretty big news reveals:
Canada went from having 0 events in 2012 to three events as it was announced they'd host UFC 149 in Calgary on July 21st, UFC 152 in Toronto on September 22, and UFC 154 in Montreal on November 17. No Vancouver events for at least two years because Vancouver sucks. Why do I have a sneaking suspicion they're saving the sexy sounding UFC 150 for New York and Madison Square Garden? I wonder where it will go when the state f*cks up legalization again ... probably Vegas.
Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen 2 will take place in Rio De Janeiro at a soccer stadium TBA on a date TBA sometime mid to late June. This clears up fears that lamewads in Sao Paolo had nixed the Sonnen Stadium show entirely over noise complaints. Your loss, suckers! Rio knows how to accept a few bucks under the table and look the other way. Dana claims the venue will hold 80,000 people, giving MMA reporters with google skills the opportunity to play 'Guess the Stadium' on twitter all afternoon.
All this, plus Georges St Pierre said "It's something that could happen, of course" when asked about Anderson Silva! Wooooow, it could happen. IT COULD HAPPEN! I'm so frickin excited it could happen! It probably won't, of course. BUT IT COULD!

FOX wants Joe Rogan to tone it down
Here's Joe Rogan complaining about FOX producers telling him to 'take it down a notch' with his UFC commentary. Maybe that would be slightly legit advice during UFC Japan, but Rogan was the only thing that kept the UFC on FOX 2 event from being a total Ambien pill. If anything, FOX should be thanking him for keeping fans conscious during those snoozefests.

'UFC gaybashers' trial starts
Two years after the Vancouver press attached a gay-bashing incident to a UFC event going on in the area the same night, we're still no closer to knowing if the guys accused of the crime were even at the fights:
David Holtzman and Peter Regier suffered concussions, cuts and bruises in an assault outside their apartment near Rogers Arena. On the night of the alleged attack, an Ultimate Fighting Championship event took place at the arena. Holtzman has said it was a homophobic hate crime and linked to the UFC event. Police investigated the incident as a hate crime.
Parminder Singh Peter Bassi, aged 30 in June 2010, and Ravinder Robbie Bassi, then aged 27, have pleaded not guilty.
...
The court heard that a building resident who witnessed the incident identified Parminder Bassi as a member of his soccer team in Richmond. Later, a Vancouver police officer also viewed a video of the alleged assailants running from the attack, and identified Parminder Bassi as a member of the Richmond soccer team.
No one seems to care about clearing up the UFC connection even though it appears in half the headlines and articles about the case. I guess they're too busy trying to establish if this was a gay bashing hate crime or not. That led to some interesting details on the confrontation itself:
As Regier and Holtzman got to the door of their building, the men asked if they were f*ggots, Regier said. "They actually asked the question: 'What are you two? Are you two f*ggots?'"
Regier said Holtzman responded, "'Yes, I am gay' and one of them said 'F*ck you, suck my cock.'"
Regier said Holtzman's response was, "'It isn't even hard.'"
Classic. That snap was totally worth getting beaten up over.

Ronda Rousey has already beaten the crap out of dudes
While casually reiterating her opinion that she could take Mr Miesha Tate - Bryan Caraway - in a fight, Ronda Rousey went into detail about the time she took on four dudes and their girlfriends at a theatre:
"It's happened to me a couple times. Not in, like, a sanctioned, legal way. But, it was entertaining to everybody that saw it. I got applause afterwards. I got jumped by a bunch of guys in a movie theatre and I beat 'em up and then everyone clapped. and then I was like, 'Maybe I should fight in front of people, 'cuz people tend to like it.' That was one of my first MMA experiences. It was like four couples, four guys and four girls. A couple of them headed me off in the aisle. It was like a thing. Their girlfriend was rude and I told her that she was rude and they tried to act tough in front of their girlfriend. She was like knocking me in the head with her boot and was being -- they were that group of people who were just rude and loud throughout the whole movie. And so, I took her boot off and threw it and told her to go get some manners. and then, her boyfriend didn't like that. And her boyfriend's friends didn't like that. So, they headed me off in the aisle and told me to go get the boot. They wouldn't let me leave and they pushed me. So, I was technically in the 'kidnap situation,' I learned this from my lawyer, and was fearing for my life, so I had to defend myself. So I did defend myself very well...and so they sued me. Whatever. the good thing was, it was an aisle, so I had them between the seats and the wall, so they couldn't get around me, so I had them one at a time. So, it was actually a good situation for a multi-person fighting situation."
...
"Well, I tried to get through, and I told them that if they didn't let me through, I'd have to do something about it. So, I tried to get through, and the guy pushed me back, and while he was pushing me, I grabbed him by his shirt and I started punching him with one hand. And, his other friend came behind me and got me by the neck and was pulling me backwards. But, I had his friend by the shirt, so I was still punching him. Then, I dropped the one guy, and the other guy had me by the neck, so I threw him over my shoulder. And my cousin and my friend Marina, they went and grabbed the other guys to keep them out of it, and the one girl was trying to get in and rash me in the face. My friend Marina pushed her out of the way. She went face first into the seats. and then they went and told the police that I punched the girl, which I never did. i just beat up the two guys. and then, um, yeah, it just turned into this big thing. And, uh, the funny thing is, my shoe came off, 'cuz I was fighting in flip flops, like ya do, so everyone was just losing shoes. I threw her shoe, I lost my shoe, everyone's looking for shoes. But, um, it was one of those things that most girls go through."
As Gus Johnson would say, 'Sometimes these things happen in a girl's life.' Maybe the life of a no-nonsense-taking ass kicker like Ronda Rousey. I like how she considered being told to pick up the boot she threw a 'kidnap situation' ... there's a bunch of people down in Florida who agree completely with that assessment. Remind me never to stare at her in real life lest she shatter my pelvis over an 'eye sexing situation.'
