The Evil of Sexual Violence in War
BMC International Health and Human Rights
War-related sexual violence is a reality for thousands of women in northern Uganda, an area that witnessed repeated attacks by Joseph Kony’s Lord's Resistance Army. The adoption of UN resolution 1820 in 2008, which calls for a cessation of war-related sexual violence against civilians in conflict zones, has done little to ameliorate the suffering of thousands of victims in Uganda and the Great Lakes region as a whole. This paper examines the specific long-term health consequences on victims of sexual assault in two displaced camps in Kitgum, northern Uganda.

How can these complex but interrelated challenges be addressed? What policy guidelines should be employed to tackle them?

Accounting for Maternal Health in South Africa
Human Rights Watch
South Africa’s health care system faces many challenges—including a high burden of disease particularly HIV/AIDS, financial mismanagement, and poor pay for health workers. In addition, maternity patients face verbal and physical abuse. The situation has deterred many from seeking care, left psychological scars, and delayed diagnosis and treatment. This document examines the shortcomings in accountability and oversight mechanisms that dog South Africa’s health system and offers policy recommendations to solve the problems.
