Excerpt:

The barrel spins again, and I want to vomit. The sun is too hot, too bright, and the sound of the tokens spinning inside of the metal barrel pierces my skull. Then the barrel stops, and the commissioner pulls another token. Everyone in the Lottery block holds a collective breath.

“Geil Thames.”

No. Not him. Not Geil. I spin around and see him standing there, the heads turned towards him with faces of sympathy. One of his daughters screams out, and I can hear them crying behind the fence as he walks forward slowly towards the stage.

My mouth is dry and there is a roaring in my ears. “No.” My body moves forward of its own accord, and the guards catch me before I can reach him. “No! Geil!”

He turns to look at me and I see that his eyes are blank, already dead. It is my worst nightmare come to life; it is everything that is wrong in the world made real.

“Take me!” The shout escapes my lips before I know what I am saying, but as the words sail over the heads of the men I know that this is the only thing to be done. I have nobody who depends on me here, and I cannot do what Geil does for his daughters.

The audience falls silent, and the only sound I hear is Claire weeping behind the gate. Geil stares back, confused.

“Take me!” I repeat, shaking off the guards’ hands. “Take me!” I am looking at Geil as I send myself to my death.

“I volunteer.”
