Lisa’s terrific blog post about summer and The Book:

Suddenly Summer

I was huddling in my threadbare winter duds and when the calendar struck June 11th, the world seemed to tip back in the right position enough for us to begin a warming trend. How could we possibly have had over 65 inches of rain since the middle of October? All that I know … (Read the whole post here…)

Fizzy Faux Cider & Laidback Knitting
Posted on August 13, 2011 by Annie
spacer Another win to make today exciting is a new book I received in the mail, 10 Secrets of the Laidback Knitters.

I’m not sure about that last “s” -
I guess that’s the S for serenity…

I get a lot of books to review, and usually I’ll make a mention in passing – or say nothing if I feel I can’t really do the book justice or if it doesn’t resonate with me – but I wanted to give a firm shout out to the authors of this book, Vicki Stiefel & Lisa Souza

spacer It’s a book that’s filled with freedom – the freedom to create the type of knitting environment you require to find your peace.  I often tell my students, “We don’t knit to make things, we knit to make ourselves happy!”

This book is filled with that sort of common wisdom. There are interviews, profiles, patterns and inspirations.

I’m more of a scanner than a reader, and react to images as much as to words, so I was very happy to see the wealth of lovely images and photographs included throughout the book.

I also heartily enjoyed the profiles on different knitters.  I know that many knitters enjoy a good read, and I think this will resonate with a large percentage of our knitting population – it’s always good to be reminded that knitting is a recreational, voluntary activity and we engage it in for our pleasure…..

10 Secrets of the Laidback Knitters by Vicki Stiefel and Lisa Souza. 166-page paperback.

I was prepared to like this one because I love Lisa’s approach to spinning, knitting, and life in general. The book did not disappoint in any way! I’m not going to reveal the 10 secrets, but I will reveal that they don’t have anything to do with, say, “the perfect way to hold the needles.” The book’s subtitle is “A Guide to Holistic Knitting, Yarn, and Life,” and the authors cut to the core of what knitting and crochet and spinning mean to us, or what they can mean.

Twenty eight patterns, from beginner to advanced, fill the book (I love the Solvang Weekend Vest!), along with profiles and essays and interesting sidebar tidbits—and great photographs! “10 Secrets of Laidback Knitters gives knitters permission to relax and have fun with their knitting; to see that knitting as as much about process as product; and to know that the stitches they knit can express the inner joy they feel,” the authors write in the introduction. This book is filled with the joy of knitting, not solutions to complex arcane problems. There’s a need for both in our libraries.

Marvelous designer, writer and knitter, Donna Druchunas, has written a terrific review of our book:

“A few weeks ago, I asked the question “is there a slow-knitting movement that’s like the slow-food movement” on Twitter. The answer was, “Yes, and you can read about it the upcoming book, 10 Secrets of the Laidback Knitters.” After I saw a preview of the book on Amazon,….” Read the whole review here.
