Take flight into orbit around the third planet
from the sun in the exciting journey ORBIT!
You control your own spacecraft. You will find
yourself in a realistic VRML environment. All of the sights you
will see are based on actual astronomical data and satellite imagery.
This is as close as you can get to being in orbit without being hired by NASA. You can
also travel in time to see what the universe looked like years ago or far into the future.
Would you like to join Borman, Lovell and
Anders on the Apollo 8 mission when the far side of the moon and the first earth-rise were
witnessed by human eyes? Simply dial in 16:37:00, December 24, 1968 and fly to the other
side of the moon.
Would you like to know what the sky looked
like to the survivors of the Titanic as they sat in their lifeboats watching their ship go
down? Set your time controls to 05:20:00, April 15, 1912 and your viewing location to 41
46' North and 50 14' West, orientation Spaceward.
Would you like a preview
a solar eclipse? Set your viewing location to 45 39' North and 22 30' East and the time
to 10:59:17, August 11, 1999, orientation Spaceward. Look to the South. Then for a closer
look, select Moon 16x from the Auto Pilot and use the slide control to adjust your
location on Earth for a perfect view.
Would you like to see the sun, moon, and five
planets line up in the sky? Set your time controls to May 5th, 2000, set your initial
orientation spaceward, and set your celestial coordinates to right ascension = 3:00 and
declination = 15.
Have star maps and constellation diagrams been
confusing to you? No more! Just turn on your navigational computer to illustrate star
names, constellations, planets, celestial coordinate systems and actually find items for
you.
If this is your first time here, you will want
to visit the Academy page to be sure you are a prepared VRML astronaut. If you are a
seasoned VRML traveler already, you may want to advance directly to the Launch site.
Get ready. Your spacecraft is ready to take off!
