ARTIST FOCUS: INTERVIEW WITH ANDREW KOLB
This week we had the esteem pleasure of interviewing Andrew Kolb. Kolb is one of the many talented artists who recently contributed work to the Triforce Tribute art show in Portland, Oregon. Though he has been illustrating for only a short time, his portfolio of work would lead you to believe he has spent decades refining his craft.
Where are you from? Where do you live now?
If this was answered with a Venn diagram, it’d be a circle. While I’ve been to a few different locations, I’m currently living in my hometown of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. It’s a nice bit of the world.
How long have you been designing/illustrating?
Well I’ve been what most would call an “illustrator” for just a couple of years, but I’ve been illustrating as a designer (a slightly different universe) for maybe 5 years now? Yeah that sounds about right. Some days I’ll tell you it feels like it’s been years, and others I’ll recognize that I’ve only really just begun.
What got you interested in art?
Well, I suppose it’s always been an interest, you know? I can’t really remember a turning point as it was always something I did. Always drawing and colouring and just trying to make whatever I was doing look as good as possible.
What was your inspiration for your pieces that you contributed to Triforce Tribute? Favorite Zelda game?
As for inspiration, the concept came from branching off of the “three” element. There’s such a rich history that in researching I found a lot of similarities to a concept in Hinduism called “The Trimurti”. Basically the universe is governed by three forces: Brahma, the creator (Zelda); Vishnu, the protector (Link); and Shiva, the destroyer (Ganon). It was such a great parallel, and the associated artwork was equally as beautiful, that it all sort of clicked. And because of that I wanted to offer as many references to the various games as possible.
Right now I lead a double life. I teach fundamental illustration a couple days a week and then the rest of my time is dedicated to the independent life of a freelance illustrator. It’s a split I rather enjoy as the social side of teaching helps balance the relatively isolated freelance environment. They rather well at balancing each other out for me.
Right now I’m playing through the Metroid Prime trilogy when I’ve got a decent amount of time, Team Fortress 2 when I’ve only got a little bit of time, and 1-Bit Ninja on my phone when I have no time at all. It’s a tiered system I’ve got going on.
If you could be any video game character who would it be? Why?
Oh frig. Who indeed! Well aside from a certain plot point that I won’t get into, I’d really like to experience the life of Crono from Chrono Trigger. Time travel! Robot and amphibious friends! Crazy monster battles and magic while also getting a sweet airship! It’s all there. Yeah, I’m going to go with Crono. Plus I wouldn’t mind being a redhead.
What do you do for fun?
Well right now I’m in a dodgeball league that is equal parts amazing and ridiculous. I don’t do the sports much but my frantic behaviour seems to be rewarded on this field of battle. And to offset the physicality of such activities, I find myself playing video games and reading lots. Comic books, art history and reference, fantasy and the likes. It runs the gamut.
That it looked like I was enjoying what I did.
