2011 PREMIERES:

Venite
Jubilate Deo

For their twentieth anniversary concert on May 2nd, Barlow Bradford and Utah Chamber Artists commissioned and premiered these settings for choir and orchestra of two morning canticles from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer.

I Saw the Cherubim
O Sapientia

These two choral works were commissioned by the C. S. Lewis Foundation for performance at its Oxbridge 2011 summer conference. I Saw the Cherubim, a combined setting of two sonnets by Oxford painter and poet Roger Wagner, premiered at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford on July 29th, accompanied by the City of Oxford Orchestra. O Sapientia, for a cappella choir, was composed to a sonnet written by Cambridge priest, poet and professor, Malcolm Guite. It premiered on August 2nd at Great St. Mary’s Church in Cambridge.

Rest Now, My Sister

While developing May’s commission, Utah Chamber Artists encouraged me to set to music a sonnet I had written in the course of coming to terms with my sister-in-law’s 2010 murder. I combined this poem with fragments of the requiem liturgy to create Rest Now, My Sister, a work for choir and orchestra which was premiered on September 19th and 20th at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake, the city where Kristine lived and died.

Confessiones

This song cycle, a setting of texts from St. Augustine’s autobiography composed in 2010, was premiered on October 21st and 26th at Westmont College and Biola University by mezzo-soprano Kate Butler, accompanied by my daughter-in-law, Elizabeth King Redford.
