ruangrupa..
ruangrupa is an artists' initiative established in 2000 by a group of artists in Jakarta. It is a not-for-profit organization that strives to support the progress of art ideas within the urban context and the larger scope of the culture, by means of exhibitions, festivals, art labs, workshops, research, and journal publication.
Since 2008, we have developed a number of new activities and altered several other activities in order to make them better integrated and focused, to serve as the basis for our collaborative work, researches, supporting activities, and the development of Indonesian contemporary art.
From June 2008, the Promotion and Support Division has opened the RURU Gallery, providing a space to exhibit visual art works by young artists and curators, by holding six exhibitions in a year. We are looking forward to receiving your exhibition proposal. The division also holds art and visual culture writing workshop, as well as curatorial workshop; both workshops are held once a year. It also holds the Jakarta 32°c, a biennale exhibiting visual art works by Jakarta students. Jakarta 32°c will be held again in 2010.
We have changed our Artist in Residence program as well as Art Workshop with the Art Lab program, which is designed to conduct research and creative collaborations on the urban and media issues. Art Lab serves as a collaborative space for individual artists as well as interdisciplinary groups from Indonesia and abroad. In 2008 - 2010, the Art Lab will focus on the issue of ‘urban mobility’, packed into two thematic projects each year.
Apart from being an international video festival held every two years, the OK. Video also functions as a distinct institution focusing on video workshops in a range of towns and cities, and conducting the production and distribution of Indonesian video works and creating a database and storage for these works.
Meanwhile, the Research and Development Division conducts research and publication, especially analyzing the development of the contemporary art and its relationship with the urban phenomenon, as well as publishing the karbonjournal.org.
