Kodiak – Spreo Superbus w/ Actress & Girl Unit Remixes (Out Now)

We bring in 2012 with the debut release from London-based duo Kodiak.

Details about Kodiak’s members are thin on the ground, however, rumour has it that they can be found working behind the counter of one of London’s most famous record shops. Their inaugural release ‘Spreo Superbus’ is a brazen assault on the senses with one of the wildest crescendos you’re likely to hear. An intense six-minute journey that guides us through the many styles of UK dance music whilst creating a unique energy and vibe.

Each track has been re-imagined by Remote Location and Mike Tucker as a kaleidoscopic responsive landscape, constantly shifting and changing with the music. Check them out below.

Having played at the first ever Numbers and with a new album ‘RIP’ imminent on Honest Jons, Actress has kept the fans and critics guessing all the way through 2011 and his Uraeus remix of ‘Spreo Superbus’ keeps his sound firmly rooted in the unknown. The remix begins with a dreamier take on the original: floating chords, sub stabs and vocal samples come drifting over a head nodding 80’s hip-hop inspired beat in which all is calm until the final third of the track when a head-rattling bassline takes over and obliterates the dynamics entirely.

The second remix comes from Girl Unit and it continues the sound that he’s become renowned for through his releases on Night Slugs. Stuttering synth work and Miami-bass style rhythms are enhanced by the impeccable production that has become synonymous with the London native.

HELLO

It’s taken us 6.5 years but as the old saying goes these things are better late than never, so welcome to the new Numbers website, produced in a Remote Location.

This is the spot to get the lowdown on Numbers artists, releases and parties, old and new.

We’ve archived content from our old labels – Dress 2 Sweat, Stuffrecords & Wireblock – and the past 6 years worth of Numbers parties. All of them complete with soundclips, images, reviews, interviews and old mixes.

You’ll also find an archive of mixes from artists across the Numbers network, and our podcast series.

Along with regular new content, there’s site upgrades and improvements to come. If you notice any issues we need to fix – wee bugs, inaccuracies, etc – or have any suggestions, hit us up! Email Nmbrs →

The first record on Numbers is The Golden Handshake EP from Lazer Sword duo Low Limit and Lando Kal, followed on April 5th by If U Want Me from Deadboy.

If you’re in London for Easter weekend (if not, get there), join us at Fabric where we’ve got Martyn, Rustie (live), Brackles and Redinho (live) on board with Numbers DJs Jackmaster, Goodhand and Nelson. More info here and Facebook event here.

Upcoming projects include releases from Redinho, Kavsrave and SRC, and parties with Modeselektor and Joy Orbison.

Podcast

There was a Numbers label showcase on Mary Anne Hobbs BBC Radio 1 on 5th November 2009. Mixed and compiled by our very own DJ Spencer, it features a whole heap of tracks we’ll be releasing in 2010 plus some classics from the old labels.

The mix is now available to download on our podcast.

What?

Numbers is now a record label.  In early 2010 we’ll be releasing our first two records. Deadboy’s If U Want Me and Low Limit & Lando Kal (aka Lazer Sword) – The Golden Handshake EP. These will be swiftly followed by Redinho’s Bare Blips and Kavsrave ‘Quotes’.

Throughout 2010 we’ll be releasing lots of music from some artists you’ve heard of, and some you haven’t. As with all things Numbers (and the old labels), art-direction and production will be handled by our friends and partners at Remote Location.

Subscribe to our mailing list and you’ll be the first to know about what’s happening with us (and you’ll get some free mixes in the process).

To celebrate we held a couple of launch parties in November 2009 at the Sub Club in Glasgow and Plastic People in London – thanks to everyone who came down and made them special, and a big thanks to the artists Lazer Sword, Deadboy, Dorian Concept, Redinho, Ben UFO and Rustie, for treating us to the debut of his new live show.

Why?

Well after six years of pinching each other’s artists, selling each other’s records, and trying to explain to friends why we have THREE (or more) record labels, Dress 2 Sweat, Stuffrecords and Wireblock, we thought it was a good idea to join forces, start fresh, and do things bigger and better under the name of the events we have been promoting together: Numbers.

History

For those who don’t know… Numbers is our party hailing from Glasgow which has been running for six+ years. We’ve packed crowds into sweaty basements and thousand-strong raves booking our musical heroes to play alongside our crack team of resident DJs. We’re proud to be in the middle of a Glasgow music scene that has never been stronger – Optimo, Rubadub and the LuckyMe collective are testament to that.

Our music policy swaggers from techno to hip-hop, via 80s R&B screamers, house, electro, UK funky, dubstep – anything that excites us and makes a party, providing it’s programmed in the right order. Over the years we’ve matched acts like Modeselektor, Kode9, Actress, Untold, Joker, Hud Mo and Rustie with founding influences – Dopplereffekt, Smith N Hack, Ghostface Killah, Autechre, Lory D and Squarepusher.

Backing up the music are razor sharp visuals and design from Retina Glitch and Remote Location.

Thanks to you we’re now in year six and still putting on the best new producers alongside Numbers favourites.
